๐๏ธVALE Geoff 'Chook' Major ๐๏ธ
The Athletics Bendigo community has lost a titan this week with the passing of Geoff 'Chook' Major at the age of 90 on Thursday, 27th of August. Our thoughts are with his wife Norma - along with Terry, Annette and all of his family at this time.
A long term legacy few can match
Geoff was an Athletics Bendigo Life Member and held the roles of President and Secretary over various terms between 1967 and 1992.
He was also a founding force behind the Eaglehawk Athletics Club, the legacy of this continues today as Eaglehawk enjoys great success during the AVSL season and Country Championships.
We are reliably told that Geoff was a registered Athletics Victoria member for 70 years! - which is a testament to his amazing longevity and dedication to athletics
Rising Stars Awards named in his honour
As an lifelong supporter of the next generation, Athletics Bendigo's Rising Stars Award was named in Geoff's honour in 2015. Always encouraging young athletes to 'keep at it', he wasn't shy in putting in a 'firm-but-fair' word to spur them along.
A great character
"Chook" was a much loved character who could be equally serious and very funny. He would stand firm on the issues that mattered - but used his great sense of cheeky humour to built rapport, too. He was deeply respected.
Memorial Service
A Service to Celebrate the life of Mr. Geoffrey William Major will be held at the William Farmer Reflection Chapel, 12 Victoria St., Eaglehawk, on TUESDAY (Sept 1) at 2 pm, followed by a burial at the Eaglehawk Lawn Cemetery.
