It’s the time of year in Australia when nesting magpies start protecting their families and their territory.
Magpies generally mate for life, and will likely only raise between 7 to 11 chicks to adulthood in a lifetime. Each clutch of young is very precious to them, which is why they may swoop some strangers they perceive as threats to their nest.
Remaining calm — not waving around an umbrella or running — and giving them space is the kindest response to their warning swoops. And since magpies can recognise human faces, your kindness will be paid in return by these clever native birds in the future. Studies have shown that magpies have excellent memories and tend not to swoop humans who have previously treated them with respect.🧡
