Welcome to my latest movie review, where every month I will be having a look at films that have a hiking, camping or outdoor adventure theme.

This month, I am reviewing The Devil's Climb (2024).

SYNOPSIS: Climbers Alex Honnold and Tommy Caldwell set out on a daring expedition to tackle Alaska's formidable Devils Thumb. Battling harsh conditions and daunting peaks, they push their physical and mental limits, while their deep friendship faces its toughest trial yet.

MY REVIEW: Inspiring and anxiety inducing.

If you suffer from a fear of heights, you may want to know that going into this with a warning that your anxiety may be triggered by the second half of this doco.

This doesn't muck around getting to the point either. Even in the early stages where they are cycling towards their destination, urgency is placed on getting to the main event.

Through out the run time, we are given snippets of the climber's personal lives and attributes. While we don't get to see a lot of any untoward behaviour with each other, it was interesting to know their thoughts on their counterparts.

The real star of the show is the location and the cinematography. The aerial shots often bring context and perspective into how big and treacherous this mountain is they are climbing.

Overall, this may not resonate with everyone due to its subject matter, but for mine, it makes me want to go out and explore. While I may not want to climb a mountain, I sure now want to conquer one on a hike or something similar.

MY RATING: 4/5

📣CHANNEL UPDATE📣

Just a quick one.

I've unable to get out and about for the last few weeks due to two compressed nerves in my neck, which is causing nerve pain in my shoulder & arm, as well as numbness in my hand.
Week 2 has been a bit better and I feel like my current condition is improving.
I'm hoping to get back out to do some more adventures soon, but it won't be before I am recovered enough to do so.
Until then, keep an eye for some videos I have in the back log, as well as the usual stuff.

Until next time, stay warm and dry!

Welcome to our latest movie review, where we will be having a look at films that have a hiking, camping or outdoor adventure theme.

This month, I am reviewing Lapsis (2020).

SYNOPSIS: Delivery man Ray Tincelli is struggling to support himself and his ailing younger brother. After a series of two-bit hustles and unsuccessful swindles, Ray takes a job in a strange new realm of the gig economy: trekking deep into the forest, pulling cable over miles of terrain to connect large, metal cubes that link together the new quantum trading market.

MY REVIEW: A dream job for hikers!

This lo-fi alternate timeline is a bit of a slow burn, but at the same time keeps you wondering.
There are a couple of lull periods, but it has a habit of recognising this and bringing your attention back asap.
It is my understanding this is the first feature film of lead actor Dean Imperial. How this bloke has not appeared in any mobster films prior to this is beyond me. But he holds the whole film together well in a fine debut.
The mystery and intrigue behind it all keeps it all going right until the end, which is my one major sticking point. The end really isn't an end, the film just ends and it's a massive fly in an otherwise very soothing ointment.
There is plenty of outdoor action for the hiking enthusiast and it will make you wish this was a real possibility at times.
Overall, a great hidden gem if you are in the mood, just don't expect a grand finalé.

MY RATING: 3.5/5

The family and I had an impromptu trip to Walhalla this weekend, which saw us take in the raw beauty of this historic mountain town. Taking the Long Tunnel Mine tour, we were informed this place was not as desirable to visit during its heyday. All the trees were cleared, landslides & flooding were common and the townsfolk was prone to illnesses which many fell victim too.
While no hiking or bushwalking trips were partaken by yours truly, it certainly was inspiration for future visits.
