Three seconds can pass very quickly! ⏱️

Held ball is one of those rules that can sometimes cause confusion, particularly around when the three-second count actually starts.

This post breaks down the basics — including when the count begins, what happens when a player is landing after a catch, and how the rule applies to general play, shooting and centre passes.

📣 FINALS DAY – SPECTATOR REMINDER 💚🤍🩶

With our Preliminary Finals taking place this Saturday, we ask all parents and spectators to please take a moment to familiarise yourselves with our allocated spectator areas.

🏟️ PLEASE STAY IN YOUR ALLOCATED AREA

Spectators are asked to remain in the designated areas shown on the court map unless directed otherwise by a BNA Match Day Official.

This helps us keep walkways clear, maintain a safe environment and ensure our players, officials and volunteers can do their jobs safely.

👏 CHEER LOUD. CHEER POSITIVE.

We absolutely want to hear you cheering for your teams!

✅ Encourage
✅ Celebrate great play
✅ Support all players
✅ Applaud effort and sportsmanship

🚫 COACHING FROM THE SIDELINE IS NOT PERMITTED

Please leave the coaching to the appointed team coaches and let our players play, learn and make their own decisions on court.

A simple “Great effort!” or “Keep going!” is always welcome! 💚

We know finals can be exciting and emotions can run high, but please remember:

RESPECT THE PLAYERS.
RESPECT THE OFFICIALS.
RESPECT THE OPPOSITION.
RESPECT THE GAME.

Our Match Day Officials are there to help things run smoothly. Please follow their directions and treat them, our umpires, coaches, volunteers and fellow spectators with respect.

🏆 For our competition grades, it’s Preliminary Finals!
Teams will be battling it out for their chance to play in the Grand Final — win and you’re in! 🔥

But it’s not just our finals teams taking to the courts…

🌟 Our NSG and 11s players are still out there playing too! 🌟

Our NSG and 11s competitions continue this Saturday, with our youngest players getting out on court, learning, developing their skills and most importantly having fun playing netball! 💚🏐

So whether you’re coming down to support a finals team or watching our future stars take the court, there’s plenty of netball happening across the morning!

🏐 RESPECT THE WHISTLE | GAME MANAGEMENT

Game management can sometimes be misunderstood — especially when a warning, suspension or ordering off comes into play.

So, what actually happens when behaviour needs to be addressed? 👇

🗣️ 1. PROACTIVE ADVICE
The umpire may give a brief instruction asking a player to change their behaviour.

➡️ 2. ADVANCE OR ESCALATE THE SANCTION
A free pass or penalty may be advanced, or a free pass may be upgraded to a penalty pass.

⚠️ 3. WARNING
The player is formally warned that further inappropriate behaviour may result in suspension.

⏱️ 4. SUSPENSION
The player leaves the court for 2 minutes of playing time. Their team plays with one position vacant.

🖐️ 5. ORDERING OFF
The player takes no further part in the match. The team plays short for 4 minutes, after which a substitute may enter.

👉 Important: Umpires will usually work through these steps in order, but serious, dangerous or highly reckless behaviour may result in an immediate warning, suspension or ordering off.

Game management isn't just about players. Coaches, managers and bench players have responsibilities too. Respectful behaviour applies throughout the entire match — including intervals and stoppages.

Listen to the umpire. Adjust your behaviour. Respect the game.💚

🏐 RESPECT THE WHISTLE | PASSING DISTANCES

How much space does a player actually need when passing the ball? 🤔

Rule 12 covers three important passing-distance situations:

1️⃣ SHORT PASS
There must be enough space for an opponent to have a genuine opportunity to deflect or intercept the ball as it travels between players.

2️⃣ OVER A THIRD
The ball must be touched or caught by a player in **each third of the court** when it travels over a third.

3️⃣ ACROSS THE TRANSVERSE LINE
When the ball is played across the transverse line, it must be caught or touched in one of the two adjacent thirds.

👉 The key takeaway: Passing isn't just about getting the ball to your teammate — there needs to be enough space and the ball needs to travel through the court correctly.

These calls can happen quickly, so understanding the rule helps players recognise why the whistle has been blown.

🌸 2026 BNA SPRING SEASON – PROPOSED GAME TIMES 🌸

We’ve put together our proposed game times for the 2026 Spring Season, with games played on Monday evenings from 19 October to 7 December.

⚠️ Please note: These are proposed times only and are subject to change depending on final court allocations and team registrations.

We’ll confirm the final competition structure and game times once registrations are finalised.

💚 Spring is just around the corner – we can’t wait to see you back on court!

🏐 EVERYONE HAS A ROLE TO PLAY: THE BENCH 🏐

Our next spotlight is on an important part of game day that can sometimes become a little crowded — the team bench.

The bench is there for the players and team officials who are involved in the game. Keeping this area clear and organised helps everyone do their job and allows players to safely enter and leave the court.

👥 WHO CAN BE ON THE BENCH?

The bench area should be limited to the players and designated team officials for that team.

This may include:

🏐 Players — including those who are waiting to take the court.

📣 Coach — responsible for coaching and providing instruction to the team.

📋 Team Manager — supporting the team with organisation and game-day requirements.

🩹 Designated bench personnel, where applicable — assisting with the team's game-day responsibilities.

🚫 WHO SHOULD NOT BE ON THE BENCH?

The bench isn't an additional spectator area.

Parents, family members, friends and other spectators should remain in the designated spectator area rather than sitting or standing on the team bench.

This helps ensure:

✔️ Players have adequate space
✔️ Team officials can communicate effectively
✔️ Players can safely move on and off the court
✔️ The bench remains organised and free from unnecessary distractions
✔️ Everyone knows where they should be during the game

💚 WHY DOES IT MATTER?

It might seem like a small thing, but keeping the bench to the people who are there for a team role helps create a safe, organised and professional game-day environment.

So when you're heading to the courts, remember:

Players and team officials on the bench.
Parents and spectators in the spectator area.

Everyone has a role.
Everyone has a place.
Everyone has a role to play.
