Back story to my Gradings for those who don't know -

In late 2021 I was asked by Ajarn Yai Malcolm Anderson (Founder of the ABK System) to design a new Grading Syllabus for ABK Muay Thai, which I was part of at that time. I left that System in early 2022 before I had a chance to hand my work over, and then made the decision to use it in my own Club.

I have the same Coloured Singlet system (White, Blue, Green, Brown) that I earnt most of mine under - BJC Muay Thai - where you have to show that you can do all the techniques in Class, correctly, and then complete some sparring rounds at the end.

But then I deviate with the Black Singlets (Black/White logo, Black/Red logo), which back in the day were equal to 1st and 2nd Degree Black Belt in the Karate side. I decided that these levels are where you need to show that you have heart and determination to overcome any obstacles, hence those being straight sparring. Those who have been around will remember the old ZDK 2nd Degree grading, know as the "Blood Grading", which was 30 x 2 min rounds of sparring. When you completed that, you knew that you had definitely earnt your Rank! This is what I wanted for my Students.

Red Singlet is the Khru ranking, which in Thai means "Teacher". For my Students this Rank isn't physical - it's all about understanding the techniques and being able to teach how to do them correctly. To pass this Grading, and become a Khru, the Student has to design and take a Class where they are able to demonstrate and explain the techniques to all levels of understanding within the Class.

Thursday night was Lachlan's Black/Red Logo Singlet Grading which he passed with flying colours πŸ‘ Lachlan dug in hard to his reserves to complete the 30 x 2 min rounds of sparring, with a 1 min break in between πŸ₯ŠπŸ₯ŠπŸ₯Š

Thanks to all the Students who turned up on the night, some of them getting over the flu, to help Lachlan achieve this milestone. Special thanks to a very old mate - Scott - who came down to push Lachlan that little bit harder by sparring, and a reasonable new mate - Andrew - for coming down to give his moral support to Lachlan and the Club πŸ™πŸ™πŸ™

Next Tuesday we have some Students going for their Coloured Singlet Gradings, and then on the Thursday Blayd is going for his Black/White Logo Singlet Grading (20 x 2 min rounds of sparring with a 1 minute break in between).

Anyone, no matter what Club or system they come from, are more than welcome to come to the Thursday Grading for a bit of sparring and to help push Blayd.

Tuesday night's Class - worked on hands, backfists, spinning elbows and a variety of kicks tonight. Numbers are down due to the "dreaded" Qld Winter low temps and the flu that comes with it but those that attended still put in the hard work πŸ₯ŠπŸ₯ŠπŸ₯Š

Your Rank means nothing if you can't back it up. Rank is a system for measuring your progress inside a dojo β€” Gradings, ability, respect, time served, techniques learned under rules and respect of Sparring.

Reality is what happens when none of that exists: no bow, no warning, no referee. It exposes the gap between credentials and capability. The core truth is simple: your Rank doesn’t fight for you, your training doesn’t magically switch on, and your opponent won’t care what your Rank is.

When everything falls apart, the only thing that matters is YOU β€” YOUR mindset, YOUR conditioning, YOUR ability to adapt under stress. Your Rank is a symbol. Reality is the test.
