When lifting with a straight back, the burden on the intervertebral disc decreases by approx. 20 % as compared to lifting with a hunched back.

• Move in as close as possible to the load
• Position your legs so they are at least hip-width apart
• Bending at the hips and knees with your buttocks out and straight back
• Keep your back straight and do not bend or twist when lifting
• Keep the weight close to the body
• When bringing the load back down, reverse what you did during the lift.
