OAKBANK – BIG TURNOUT AT SCHOOLS XC

Another big day at the Schools Cross Country Championships at Oakbank yesterday. While the weather was wet at times and the course got muddier as the day went on, it was a true test of cross country for everyone.

TOURNEUR WINS WOMENS CROSS COUNTRY AT FLINDERS UNIVERSITY

Back under lights for the first time since 2019 last Friday night for the Flinders Cross Country. While the loop was restricted to 1k it didn’t disappoint.

In the women’s race HANNAH TOURNEUR went clear early and never relinquished her lead to take a comfortable win. Behind her were two of the clubs talented young athletes MARTINA HAMS GARRIGA and EVA PFITZNER in third and fourth.

Great to see a new crop of Flinders athletes coming through with JETT NOBLE, TOM CARROLL and HUDSON KERLEY the first three home.

They might be young, but EDDIE WILLIAMS, ROCCO KENYON and CODY KENYON were impressive out in front of the 2k event.

As our ASA registrations grow over the 180 mark it was great to have KEEGAN WILSON, AYLISH BRADLEY, EMMA TUCKER, HUDSON KERLEY, CHARLIE STOTT and TIMON SIDERIS having their first run foe the club on home turf.

Thanks to everyone who helped on the night. The FREE BBQ was a welcome addition to the events.

Great photos from Riley Hughes.

We look forward to making next year’s event bigger and better.

FUSS BREAKS 12” FOR 100M AT JUNIOR NATIONALS

Late wrap of the Junior Nationals.

HAYLEY FUSS (11.76) capped off her breakout season as the first Flinders female to go under 12 seconds for the 100m coming fifth in the nation. Sport can be cruel and unfortunately Hayley was unable to finish her heat of the 200m after sustaining a hamstring injury. Not the way Hayley would want to finish her championships, but in time can reflect on a magnificent season.

It wasn’t all plain sailing for ELSIE PARSONS as she was originally DQd (lane infringement) in her U20 heat of the 400m, but was reinstated overnight when there was footage which cleared her of an infringement. Another strong semi-final saw her qualify for the final.

Making her national debut MARTINA HAMS GARRIGA ran her races her way and was rewarded with two big PBs in the 1500m and 3000m. JACK FANNING ran his usual gutsy style and got a PB.

In the sprints, young JESSICA ADCOCK and RACHEL STOLTZ got valuable experience running individual and relays races.

Want to watch Hayley in action.

There is a YouTube channel “Vic Pascoe” which seems to be a labour of love where individual races are posted. The women’s U18s final was the standout sprint race of the meet with nearly everyone getting big PBs. 1st. Maya Taber NSW 11.36 w +1.0, 2nd. Matilda Harrison NSW 11.61, 3rd. Leah Berry VIC 11.62, 4th. Maddie Gifford NSW 11.67, 5th. Hayley Fuss SA 11.76, 6th. Charlee Vincent QLD 11.96, 7th. Emmanuella Omage NSW 11.99, 8th. Alyssa McDonald QLD 14.35.

RECORD NUMBER (170) OF ASA REGISTRATIONS

We haven’t started the winter season and the club has reached 170 ASA registrations which is a record number for the club, going one better than last year’s 169.

It is fitting that we welcome a new member ETHAN SMITH to the club, who trains at Flinders on Thursday’s with Coach Sutters 5pm group and started studying engineering at the university this year.

If you have been to Seacliff Parkrun you most probably have seen Ethan as he has run 279 of the 363 (76%) after starting at number 62. Ethan has 288 in total so not far away from his 300th. What is more impressive is that Ethan has crossed the line first 64 times. Hard to figure out but there wouldn’t be many athletes who have won 64 of any Parkrun.

Looking forward to getting Ethan out for a track 5k at some stage.
