On Thursday night last week, I hit my all-time low.

I sobbed on my bathroom floor for over an hour as my incredible boyfriend begged me to even lift my head as I continually told him that I couldn’t do it any longer.

The small flicker of hope left to represent my country at the Olympics had finally extinguished.

Those closest to me only know of the complete heartbreak I’ve endured over the last 5 weeks. First missing Olympic selection and then three weeks later being unnamed as travelling reserve.

Feeling so defeated, Willem finally put his foot down and told me we were taking a mental health day from training on Friday.

The first of the entire year.

I reluctantly refused before finally coming to the agreement that I would set my alarm and only if I felt up to it, would I go.

At 5am and operating on 4 hours sleep, I yet again went and exhaustedly stood in the pouring rain to train.

I cried twice during training.

I cried after training.

I cried when I came home and saw Willems mother hanging out my washing because I had fallen so far behind with life.

Later that day, I received a call from my head coach informing me that a teammate and friend had devastatingly injured herself and I was asked whether I would like to join the Olympic team in Tokyo.

It’s not the way you envision your childhood dream unfolding but neither has my athletic career.

I haven’t attended a major tournament.

Through either injury or non-selection I’ve missed Junior World Cup, the Commonwealth Games, World Cup, Pro-League Finals and Olympic Qualifiers.

Yet tomorrow I fly to Japan to fulfil my lifelong dream of becoming an Olympian.

Thank you to my family and friends who constantly provided hope during times when I felt there was none. This achievement is yours as much as it is mine. 💕

When I first started working with Emma, my eating disorder psychologist, my goal was to eat a slice of rich chocolate mud-cake and feel satisfied. Satisfied to not eat the entire cake in secret yet be able to enjoy one delicious slice guilt-free.

As I celebrated my 24th birthday dinner yesterday with family and friends, I realised the growth I've made. I enjoyed one delicious slice of a 3-layer mud-cake made by my supportive boyfriend (8 hours later....) and felt so lucky to have been and continue to be surrounded by a network of loving friends and family.

That is how a slice of birthday cake should be consumed.
