It is also the last week all of our teams play at home. Games start at 1pm. Refreshments will be available all day, and after play has finished dinner will be available for $5 per person.

Please join us as we come together to celebrate and remember the life of Michael Herk.

Michael was a much-loved member of our club, whose kindness, humour, friendship, and dedication touched the lives of so many over the years. This memorial service is an opportunity for family, friends, teammates, colleagues, and the wider community to share memories, honour his legacy, and celebrate the incredible person he was.

We've lost a true legend in the sport - well loved outside of just Australia.

Michael Herk, born and raised in New Zealand and educated at Mt Roskill Grammar.

As a kid, Mike was a very good Rugby player, but always had a passion for softball. He played softball as a catcher at the highest level in New Zealand through the 1970’s and 1980’s and at that time caught to some of the best pitchers in the world.

Following his playing career Mike turned to coaching, then coached multiple winning Provincial cups and National Cups. It was during his early coaching days, he met a lovely young lady by the name of Gina Weber, who would later become his life partner and the best women’s pitcher in the world as well.

Mike & Gina, they built a beautiful partnership whilst Mike continued to coach Softball teams and Gina continued to pitch for those teams (and other teams) Gina was an unbelievable pitcher who went on to win multiple World Championship’s.

In the early 2000’s Mike and Gina then moved to Australia. First to NSW and then finally settled in WA – good choice, smart couple!

Once in WA, Herky went straight into coaching and has had a lasting impact on many softball players futures in a positive way.

Yes, some people will say he was very direct by nature, but he loved the game of softball, and he always called it as he saw it! He loved his club and his fellow clubmates and underneath that gruff exterior was one of the biggest hearts and care for softballers that you will ever see or hope to meet! If you ever got a chance to talk to him properly, you would understand that.

The game of softball is much better than it would have been, if the game never met Mike Herk! A great teammate, coach and club person that will be sorely missed.

Bayswater Morley Monarchs Softball Club sadly acknowledges the passing of Michael Herk.

Herky was a valuable member of our club from the late 2000s to late 2010s, who served the club with dedication, most notably as a coach, but also as a long term committee member and a term as President.

He had successful stints coaching both junior and senior teams, but his major impact came as the Head Coach of our Division 1 Mens side who he led to multiple flags. Herky also had success with the WA Boys U19s team, leading them to a national title in 2009.

His passion and commitment to our club, his players, and his friends, left a lasting impact on everyone who had the privilege of being coached by him, or of calling him a friend.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to Gina, family, friends, and all who knew Herky. He will be greatly missed and forever remembered.

Results from Sunday 3rd May, 2026.
It was a great day at the club with all mens teams playing at home. Changing the orientation this season of diamond 2 has had a great impact with seeing so many people hanging around to watch the game.
It was also great to see all teams acknowledge the passing of Michael Herk, past president, division 1 coach, committee member, state team coach, junior coach for both mens and womens as well as junior state coach as well as a mentor for many of the current and past members of the club.
