Another close competition played out today as Barraba Golf Club members played and Individual Stableford for the Phil Hiscock Trophy.

The beauty of the MiScore App is that live scores are available during the round and players linked can see how they are positioned. The early clubhouse leader was Robert Sweeney (8) on 35pts. In the next group Jamie Neale (5) eclipsed him on 36pts to hold the temporary lead, before Michael Artis (14) went to 37pts. In the last group of the day Neil Smith (23) grabbed the win with 38pts. Congratulations to Neil.

In match-play competition ran simultaneously with the Stableford scoring, Neil Smith teamed with Ian Cabot to defeat the pairing of Paul Grigg and Sam Faint on the 18th hole invery close match. Bevan Benson (19) required 4 extra holes to overcome Bill Simpson (15).

Next week is a 4BBB Aggregate for the M.Djuric and J.Freeman Trophy. Visitors are welcome to play, with the competition teeing off at 12pm on Sunday.

Looking further ahead, the Junior Golf Day is scheduled for Tuesday 29th September and the NSW SandGreens tournament is being held at Hillston (near Griffith) on 10/11 October. Jamie Neale, Ian Cabot and Neil Smith are registered to represent the club, with nominations still open. Members are asked to consider travelling away to this event.

Kevin Kelaher was a clear winner in the 4th round of the Barraba Golf Club Championship today. Playing for the Ian Cabot Trophy, Kevin played the course to par, finishing with a net 68. Second was Morgan Phillips (24) on 71 with Jessie Phillips (15) 3rd a shot further back.

Jessie Phillips claimed the Net Championship from Kevin Kelaher (3) with Robert Sweeney (8) 3rd.

Chris Sweeney (1) was crowned club champion for 2026, with Kevin Kelaher closing to a 2 shot deficit to claim 2nd. Jamie Neale (6) and Robert Sweeney tied for 3rd.

Kerrie Smith (21) was the best placed lady, she also defeated Campbell Tonkin in a match play to progress further in that competition.

Nearest the pins went to Kevin Kelaher and Robert Sweeney, with both golfers recording a double - Robert on the 6th and 16th with Kevin on the 3rd and 18th.

Next week is an Individual Stableford for Phil Hiscock’s Trophy. Members and visitors are welcome to play, with the competition teeing off at 12pm next Sunday.

It was noted at the presentation how valuable the volunteer labour is to our club, with the course being consistently turned out is fine condition. Thank you to all involved for keeping the course in condition. The greens today played exceptionally well.

It was Michael (14) and Peter Artis (28) that took out the Sweeney/Middlemiss Trophy this afternoon at Barraba Golf Club. The teams ‘best ball’ competition was decided on countback, with Gary Allen (17) and Campbell Tonkin (13) second in a tied score of 42 points.

Highlighting the closeness of competition, Liam Johnston (30) and Ian Cabot (14) tied for third with Kerry Smith (21) and Josh Austin (12) on 41 points.

The pairing of Sam Faint/Paul Grigg and Jamie Neale/Kevin Kelaher finished on 40 points.

Mitch Reed played as a visitor and was stitched up with a bogie prize by the Sweeney family. The hospitality by way of food and snacks in the clubhouse after the event was well-received by all and a credit the Sweeney and Middlemiss families who do quite a bit for sport in our town. The event winners, Peter and Michael Artis each received a box of golf balls and a quality golf cap as additional prizes complimentary of the trophy sponsors making the prize pool quite lucrative when combined with club credits. Again, well done to the Sweeney and Middlemiss clans.

Nearest the pins went to Kerrie Smith and Liam Johnston.

Next Sunday is the final round of the club championships. Jesse Phillips is leading the Nett scoring by 3 shots from Sam Faint and Robert Sweeney, with Neil Smith in striking distance 5 behind.

In the stroke event Chris Sweeney has a handy lead, with Kevin Kelaher, Jamie Neale, Peter York and Robert Sweeney filing the minor placings.

It is the intention of the club to play those in championship contention together with draft groupings being:

12.30 tee off 1. Chris Sweeney 2. Kevin Kelaher 3. Jamie Neale 4. Peter York.

It is possible that a player outside the top 4 could win the Nett, as Kerrie Smith, Morgan Phillips and Liam Johnston are still within reach.

Barraba Junior Member Millah Wilkinson is representing North-West Primary Schools in the NSWPSSA Championships this week.

The best junior golfers from all over the State are playing at Tamworth Golf Club as part of a 3-day tournament.

Millah has only been playing golf just over 6 months, and plays off a competitive 26 handicap already. He is mentored and coached voluntarily by club members - but he isn’t alone. Noah Lowe is another talented junior golfer who has followed a similar pathway. Noah recently paired with Peter York to finish 2nd outright in the clubs foursomes championship, matching it with the men!

With almost 40 mini-golfers recently attending our Junior Day, a handful regularly turning out in Sunday competitions and many other youngsters playing socially in the afternoons - junior golf is on the up at Barraba.

If you wish your child to be involved, get in contact. We can offer an introduction to the game which includes junior membership for $20 and assistance in supplying equipment.

Millah played an Ambrose team competition today and will contest the 1st round of a 36 hole stroke event tomorrow. His goal is to shoot 2 rounds under 100 on the unfamiliar grass. In practice last Friday he shot 99 on his first look at the course.

Miserable conditions greeted the Barraba golfers today with intermittent rain effecting play. Nonetheless, 22 players competed for the Hulm family trophy in a 2 person Ambrose format.

Jamie Neale (6) and Josh Austin (12) ranked 1st with a 65.5 net, a mere quarter of a point ahead of Robert (8) and Chris Sweeney (1) in second position with 65.75. Both pairings broke par for the course.

Gary Allen (17) and David Kelly (17) finished 3rd with 66.5.

The MiScore app live leaderboard swapped and changed through the final few holes with many teams in contention.

Nearest the pins went to Will Sedgwick on the 3rd, Gary Allen on the 6th and Millah Wilkinson on the 16th.

Millah is representing North-West in the State Primary School tournament this coming week. We wish him all the best.

Next Sunday the club is playing a 4BBB Stableford for the Sweeney and Middlemiss Trophy.

There has been an increase in people using the golf course in recent times, and this is great - however many are not paying their $10 green fees. This can be paid via the machine near the club door.

The club and course are 100% powered by volunteer energy and every contribution helps us to keep the facilities open and in good condition. But we aren’t a charity.

If you are playing regularly - membership options start from a measly $20 for juniors.

We welcome visitors to play in Sunday competitions. The fees are $15 for non-members and this Sunday at 12pm we are hosting a 2 person Ambrose.

We also encourage visitors to play in the daylight-saving 9 hole competitions that will commence in a couple of months.

In short - pay up. It’s only fair…

An individual Stableford was played today at Barraba Golf Club for the D.McMurtrie trophy and it’s was Robert Sweeney (8) that won the day with a decisive 41 points.

Dave Hulm (35) was runner-up on 38 points with Ian Cabot (14) defeating a group of players on 37 points to claim 3rd in a Countback.

Garry Allen, Kerry Smith, Bill Simpson and Peter Artis featured on the leaderboard with scores bettering their handicap.

In match-play Kerrie Smith defeated Jamie Neale and Neil Smith defeated Will Sedgwick.

Next Sunday is a two-person Ambrose so it is time to form teams to compete. Whilst we are talking about teams - Barraba is sending a team to the NSW Sandgreens Championships at Hillston on October 10/11. We need names this week of players who intend to travel to represent the club so as to organise accomodation, transport and team merchandise.

The handicapper has been busy with a few players losing shots recently and playing under lower handicaps. The scores today were quite good with 7 players lowering their handicap quota.

Barraba Golf Club played for the D.Kelly and W.McKidd Trophy today, a 4BBB Multiplier Stableford competition.

Making it 3 weeks in a row, Kerrie Smith (25) featured in the winning pairing, combined with husband Neil Smith (23) for 81 points. Kerrie is playing some fantastic golf at present and personally recorded 43 stableford points, playing well below her handicap.

In 2nd place was the Junior pairing of Millah Wilkinson (27) and Noah Lowe (29) falling 3 points behind the Smiths after combining for 78 points.

3rd was another Junior - Parker Green (37) with Jamie Neale (5) scoring 69 points.

It is encouraging to see the juniors playing in the Sunday competitions with 5 juniors playing today.

Of note, was Chris Sweeney’s (1) personal round of 41 Stableford points. That is a gross -4 or 67 shots off the stick for the 1 handicap golfer.

Nearest the pins went to Noah Lowe on the 3rd, Gary Allen on the 6th, Kerrie Smith on the 16th and Chris Sweeney on the 18th.

The clubs transition to electronic scoring via the MiScore App is working well.

Next Sunday the club will play an individual Stableford for the D.McMurtrie Trophy.

The beauty of MiScore is the stats are readily available on how the field played the course.

Easiest hole since we started using MiScore a few weeks ago? 12th a Par 3 playing at an average of approx 3.5

Hardest? 7th a par 5 playing at an average of approx 7.

Obviously windy conditions play a part with holes 7, 8 and 4 playing into the wind and ranking the hardest.

Holes 12, 6, 3 - the downwind par 3s have been the easiest overall - but if you factor in player grade - the 5th hole rates 2nd easiest for the lower hcp players.

If you have the MiScore App there are Individual scoring statistics available that highlight your best holes and scoring profile. If you want to keep more detailed stats that is available as well. It can track fairways hit or missed, putts and other data.

Also, if you don’t have a GPS device the app doubles as a yardage book. It gives you distances to the green from where you are at on the course, and a ‘fly-over’ function can also give you distances to hazards or any other part of the course.

Live scoring is also available. You can ‘spy’ on how other players are travelling on their rounds. Of course, you can also see results posted after the event and this is archived with both yours, your markers score and and side-games (match play) that were also active.

I understand that change comes slowly, and fair enough - cards work well and not everyone wants to have their phone on the course, but Mi-Score opens up our potential.

I just noticed that the registrations for the NSW Sand Green Championship Opened last Wednesday.

It’s being held at Hilston - which is in the Riverina approx 650km from Barraba - on the weekend of the 10th/11th October.

I can see that they already have quite a few registrations, so if you are planning on going - it might be worth visiting the link I’ve attached and registering sooner rather than later.

I’ve made a snap decision to go and have paid up. I figured that even though it was before I was involved, we hosted this event last year and Ben Koopman from our club won the title so we need some representation at Hilston.

The event is Open to Men with a HCP below 27. It’s a two day tournament with an entry fee of $110.
