Trade day was held last Thursday in Barooga, with a full field of bowlers in attendance. 16 rinks, 96 players, made it a great way to promote our greens and club. Thanks to all involved on the day.
Winners were Neil Macklin (Nipper), Doug Larkin, and Geoff Mitchell, and runners-up were Gary Mott, Ian Cameron and Ziggy Rempel.
On Friday, we had a reduced field due to many of our members being involved in other bowling commitments during the week; however, 12 bowlers enjoyed a social bowls game in perfect bowling conditions. Winners of the day were Ruth Burnett and John Crump with a score of plus 14. Runners-up were Peter Russell and Geoff Sloan with plus 10. With a reduced field, we had no best or second games awarded however we did have a lucky draw of the card for a $10.00 prize, with the lucky winners being Archie Ellis and Dianne McMahon. The lucky draw prize of $50.00 was again held, and this time it was Quentin Pettit’s name that came out, but Quentin chose this week not to play, so unfortunately he missed out. On our last day of Keith’s Friday before Pennant, if the draw does not go off with the person present, we will continue conducting the draw until such time as a person present wins. With the incentive to play on 25th September, make it a date to play on the day.
Some club fours matches have already been played, with more to come this week. Thanks to everyone who made themselves available to play. Results will be advised next week.
Our club internal practice match is being played today (Sunday), giving players a chance to show their prowess and tune their game in a pennant format. It is important to realise that sides selected do not necessarily mean that it is the way teams will be in the pennant season, as the selectors are trying various people in different positions. Good luck to everyone playing. Don’t forget our practice match against Shepparton East on September 19th. It would assist the selectors if players could indicate if they are unavailable for play on this day.
We have a Midweek pennant practice match on Tuesday 22nd. September, with teams to be selected and posted on the team app and the ladies’ selection board, hopefully on Monday. Ladies 100 up draw will be drawn and posted on Monday as well.
Our learn-to-bowl group is continuing each Sunday at 10.00, with upwards of 20 people attending, so the idea of the program has proved to be successful, and we hope some new bowlers will continue with the club and become pennant bowlers of the future.

A fantastic day on the greens at Barooga Sports Bowls Club!

What a great turnout for today’s Trade Day, with more than 90 bowlers representing 10 clubs coming together for a brilliant day of bowls, friendship and plenty of fun.

The Barooga bowlers were also looking particularly sharp, proudly showing off their new club shirts for the occasion!

Thanks to everyone who travelled from near and far to take part and help make the day such a success.

The new bowler program last Sunday was a huge success, with around 20 new bowlers attending and five new bowlers hoping to join in with other activities. The new bowlers came despite it being a very cold and foggy morning and enjoyed the coaching given to them by our coach and, of course, the sausage sizzle held afterwards. It is on again today (Sunday) at 10.00am, and a decision will then be made regarding the following Sunday, as it will be Father's Day.
Cobram Anglican School will be coming on Tuesday at 1.20pm, and this is another opportunity for us to encourage young bowlers to join our club. If you can attend, it would be helpful.
Club practice will start this Wednesday at 1.00pm, and we hope all bowlers can come along for some early practice under the guidance of our coach, Chris Philpot.
Last week, the Scoungers game was cancelled due to bad weather; however, on Friday the weather was perfect, we had 26 bowlers playing. The winners of the day were Geoff Mitchell and Karen Bruce, with +15. Runners-up were Jeff Nisbet and Steve Geddes, a visitor from Karingal Bowls Club, with plus 11. Best first game winners were Geoff Sloan and Ian McMahon with plus 11 and best second game winners were Fran Thatcher and Des Toohey, also with plus 11. The lucky draw winner's name this week was Peter Russell, and as he was present, he collected the $50.00. Well done to Peter.
Our opening day, incorporating the start of the club fours, is next Saturday, the 5th. September. The day will commence at 9.30am with the opening by our Club President and the rolling of the first jack and bowl by our respective Club champions from last season. Club fours will start with a roll-up at 9.45am with games commencing at 10.00am. All sides will play their first round at 10.00am, which includes the byes. Please bring along your own lunch to enjoy after the first game, when the unveiling of the new life members board will occur along with the presentation of our new shirts for the upcoming season. If you want your name embroidered on the new shirt, please have $5.00 handy, and we will arrange to get the new shirts all done for you and returned in time for the first game of the season. You will also need to have $10.00 available for the entry fee for the Club Fours.
Teams have been selected for the Club Fours and published, but if the skippers could phone and confirm that their players are available, it will assist in the running of the day.
The first official ladies' Monday social day will be held on Monday 7th September. Ladies to bring a small plate for a shared lunch.
All members are invited to attend next Thursday to watch the running of the Ladies 5-a-side tournament, where we have 16 visiting teams coming to play interesting bowls in a different format to usual.

Apologies to all, the medley pairs results that were promised last week are not available. I did not receive them, so apologies to the various winners.
Keith's Friday had 16 players playing in fine conditions. Winners of the day were decided by ends won after two teams came in with plus 12, with one team having 13 ends won whilst the other had 14, so it was a very tight finish. Winners were Ruth Campbell, sharing the skipper's role with Ray Wright and Gavan Cullen, with runners-up being Fran Thatcher and Ian McMahon, the unlucky ones.
We had two draws for the $50.00 lucky draw prize, with Jon O’Dwyer's name, then Ken Newton's, but neither were playing, so we will continue next week with two draws until it goes off, then it will revert to one draw.
This Tuesday is the final Scroungers to be played this year, so if you would like a game, please get your name down on the sheet on the notice board or ring a member of the match committee to get your name in.
Practice matches for the upcoming season are upon us with the first being for Saturday pennant on Sunday 13th. September. Teams will be selected on the 7th, so you need to have your name down for consideration by that date.
Opening day is the 5th of September, when our new shirts will be handed out to those playing pennant this season, so make sure you attend to make the process of everyone having the correct shirt to start the season off as easy as possible. Remember, we all have to have the same shirt when playing pennant.
Midweek pennant have a practice match set for the 22nd September against Yarrowonga. Selected teams will be advised closer to that date via Team App and the notice board.
The learn to bowl program commences today (Sunday) and will continue next Sunday at the same time.

16/08/2026

Only one week to go until the Learn-to-bowl day next Sunday at 10.00am. The day will be fun with our coach available to show all new bowlers how to bowl, and maybe there will be a few things you and I can learn as well along the way. Make your plans now to be there next Sunday and bring along a friend or neighbour to enjoy the morning, followed by a sausage sizzle afterwards.
Keith's Friday had 24 bowlers enjoying the day in fine conditions last Friday, with the winners being the combination of Val Toohey and Gordon Bennett, with a score of plus 12, Archie Ellis and Charlie Mooney were runners-up with plus 10. Best first game winners were Kevin Kennedy and Brian Baldwin with plus 6, and best second game winners were Geoff Sloan and Fran Thatcher with a very good score of plus 15. The lucky draw for $50.00 was conducted, and the name that came out was Anthony Hulm, but as he was not present, it was not won. Next Friday, we will do two draws if the first name out is not present, so make sure you come along for the day of bowls and a chance to win the $50.00.
It is timely to now advise everyone that opening day is coming upon us. More details will follow shortly on the format of the day, but two rounds of the club fours will be played, and the new shirts will be handed out to all members who will be playing pennant this season, so make sure you have September 5th marked down in your diaries to attend.
The Thursday before opening day, we will have the ladies' 5-a-side tournament being played and although most things have been organised and allocated, if you have some spare time, come on down and enjoy the day.
Our first Saturday pennant practice match will be an in-house game played on Sunday 13th September, with the selectors meeting on the 7th to select teams. Teams will be announced on team app sometime on the 7th and on the notice board with a follow-up, if necessary, by phone by the respective skips.
Future practice matches for Saturday pennant are organised to be played at Barooga against East Shepparton on Saturday the 19th September and against Corowa on the 3rd. October.
Mid-week pennant have had to change their practice match against Yarrawonga to the 22nd September from the week earlier due to a clash of dates, so if you have previously notified of your intention to play on the 15th it is assumed you will be available for the new date.
Medley pairs will be played this Tuesday with a strong contingent expected to play. Results will be advised next week.
There have been many improvements made to the bowlslink app and it is recommended that all bowlers update their bowlslink app in the App store for iOS devices and Google play for Android devices.

09/08/2026

We are starting to get ready for the upcoming season, with lots of things planned for this September and, for that matter, August. August 23rd is the learn-to-bowl day, where we hope you all bring someone along to have a go at this great game of bowls. The day will be a 10.00am start with a BBQ afterwards, hopefully on a sunny Sunday, so it will be a great time to introduce your friends to this game and enjoy some friendship.
September will be busy with practice matches planned for the 13th and 19th for Saturday pennant players and the 15th for midweek pennant players. Also in September, we have the ladies' 5-a-side tournament on the 3rd and, of course, the club opening day on the 5th, when the club fours will commence. There is also the practice match against Corowa on the 3rd of October, so it is timely to remind everybody to have a look at the notice board and record your name for the practice matches and to cross your name off if you are unavailable for the club fours.
Last Tuesday, the medley pairs were played with 22 teams attending. In a close finish to the day, there were 6 teams finishing on three wins. The winners of the day were Rod Brown and Steve Guille with 52 points, with runners-up Chris O'Connell and Steve Condrick with 50 points and 20 shots up. Close behind were John Dixon and Geoff Westmore, also with 50 points but with 19 shots up, just missing out. The best first-game winners were Robbie Glover and Marianne Kirk, with 15 shots up. The best second-game winners were Ray Wright and Ken Newton, with 14 shots up. The best third-game winners were John Dixon and Geoff Westmore, with 15 shots up.
On Friday, in perfect winter weather, we had 20 players attending. Winners of the day were Geoff Sloan and Graeme Hickey with a score of plus 10. Runners-up were John Crump and Des Toohey with plus 9. The best first-game winners were Fred Pinnock and Ian McMahon with plus 5. The best second-game winners were Gavan Cullen and Ruth Burnett with plus 9. Lucky draw winner's name drawn was John Bruce, but as he is on holidays and away, he could not collect.
Lastly, don't forget your census form for Tuesday night.

01/08/2026

This past week has been relatively quiet, with Scroungers played on Tuesday and Keith's Friday social bowls on Friday. Scroungers had 16 players playing. The winner was Ray Wright, with Peter Russell as runner-up. On a beautiful Friday, we had 20 players out on the green enjoying the sunshine. Winners of the day were the combination of Carol Cox and new member Ian McMahon with plus 13; runners-up were Joan Boyer and Cheryl Merrett with plus 7. Other winners of the best first and second games I unfortunately lost details to, which I apologise.
The next project coming up is the ladies 5-a-side tournament, to be held on Thursday 3rd September. Sides are full, with 16 teams competing, so it should be a successful event. We do, however, need 8 markers for the morning game of singles so ladies, or men, if you are available to mark, please put your name down on the whiteboard inside the clubhouse as this will assist the organisers in finalising duties for the event.
Opening day is September 5th, when we will be playing two rounds of the club fours and also handing out our new shirts for those who have indicated they will be playing pennant next season. We will be asking everyone to try on their shirts to ensure they fit and if so, return them on the day with details of what you require regarding your name embroidered on the shirt. If you don't want your name on your shirt, that is fine, but if you do, there is a small charge of $5.00 to cover the cost.
The men's program for bowls has now been finalised, with details now posted on Team App under other documents, as is the Ladies program.
The draw for pennant has been done and will also be posted on Team App under other documents.

Well, another week has gone by as we get ready for the upcoming season of Pennant. The selection committee and the match committees have been hard at work planning for the season ahead.
Don’t forget to cross your names off the sheets that are on the main notice board if you are unavailable for the practice matches organised and the club fours which are to be played on opening day, Saturday 5th September. The match committee will be selecting names from the lists for the fours, and the selection committee will be selecting teams from those available on the list for the practice matches.
The ladies will be holding a 5-a-side tournament on Thursday 3rd September. They will need 8 markers for the morning game of singles and would like anyone who can assist to put their name down on the whiteboard inside the club room, or ring Ruth Burnett to advise. Anybody not playing in the men’s trade day on the day would be welcome.
Don’t forget the “Learn to Bowl” day on Sunday the 23rd August. Please ask your friends or neighbours and get them down for a chance to learn this great game of bowls.
Medley pairs was played last Tuesday when 24 teams played from around the district. Winners, though, were the Barooga pair of John Sullivan and Ray Wright; runners-up were Dean Rowland and Frank from Tocumwal. Best first game winners were Marianne Kirk from Numurkah Golf and Brian Nisbet from East Shepparton. Best second game winners were Ian and Dianne McMahon from Katandra. Best third game winners were Paul Carter and Norm Barnes from Finley.
On Friday, 16 bowlers played in Keith’s Friday with Ray Wright and Quentin Pettit the outright winners. Runners up were Ruth Burnett and Di Nye. Best first game winners were Graeme Hickey and Fred Pinnuck, and best second game winners were Jen Jennings and Peter Russell. The lucky draw name that came out was Willie Nelson, but as he was unable to play, the prize did not go off once again.
Finally, don’t forget that subs are due by 31st July, so please, if you haven’t as yet paid at the Sporties please do so before the end of the month.
