A lot of shy children genuinely want friends.

They want to feel included.
They want to belong.
They want to join in.

But social skills are exactly that… skills.

And skills need practice.

Group horse activities give children a natural way to connect with others. They're talking about horses, helping each other, cheering each other on, and sharing experiences.

There's less pressure than simply being told to "go make friends."

Sometimes all it takes is spending time around other children who love horses too.

Those little interactions can slowly grow into friendships, confidence, and a sense of belonging.

"I'll book lessons once we've settled in."

I hear this all the time after someone buys a new horse.

But here's the thing…

You don't service your car after it breaks down. You maintain it to help prevent problems.

The same can apply to your new horse.

Early lessons can help identify things like:

Communication gaps
Confidence issues
Handling concerns
Small behavioural changes
Areas where horse and rider aren't understanding each other yet

Many little issues are much easier to work through early than after months of frustration.

Lessons aren't just for fixing problems.

They're about setting you and your horse up for success right from the beginning.

When you pay for a horse riding lesson, you're not just paying for the hour we spend together.

You're helping cover:

🐴 Feed and hay for the horses
🐴 Farrier and hoof care
🐴 Worming, vaccinations and veterinary care
🐴 Saddles, bridles and equipment maintenance
🐴 Replacing broken gear and safety equipment
🐴 Insurance and business expenses
🐴 Fuel and travel costs
🐴 Arena and property maintenance
🐴 Time spent exercising and caring for the horses outside of lessons
🐴 Planning lessons to suit each rider's goals
🐴 Ongoing education and training so I can continue improving as an instructor
🐴 Prizes, activities and special events for clients

Most importantly, you're helping provide safe, happy, well-cared-for horses that can teach and support riders of all ages and abilities.

There is so much that goes on behind the scenes that often isn't seen, but it all contributes to the experience you receive.

πŸ’¬ A gentle reminder about boundaries and messages...

If I don't reply to your message straight away, especially after hours, please don't take it personally.

Like everyone, I need time away from my phone and work. My evenings are for recharging, spending time with family, caring for my own animals, and simply having some downtime.

Running a business doesn't mean I'm available 24/7.

I will always get back to messages as soon as I can during business hours, and I truly appreciate your patience and understanding.

Respecting boundaries helps me show up as the best version of myself for my clients, their horses, and my own wellbeing. ❀️

Thank you for understanding that a delayed reply doesn't mean I don't care – it simply means I'm taking care of myself too.

A huge part of becoming a better horse person is learning to "see."

When you watch other riders, you begin to notice:

✨ When a horse is relaxed
✨ When a horse is confused
✨ How posture affects balance
✨ The difference between tension and softness
✨ The little changes that happen before bigger behaviours appear

Developing your eye takes time, and watching others is one of the best ways to do it.

Every horse and rider combination has something to teach us.

One of the biggest benefits of group horse activities is that they offer experiences you simply can't recreate at home.

Your horse gets exposed to:
🐴 Other horses nearby
🐴 Different environments and obstacles
🐴 New sights, sounds and distractions
🐴 Standing quietly while others are moving around

For many horses, these experiences are incredibly valuable. They learn that not everything new is scary and that they can stay calm and focused even when things are happening around them.

And for riders? You get to practise riding in real-life situations with support around you.

Growth happens outside of our comfort zone, but it doesn't have to happen alone.

I know it can be tempting to protect our shy children from situations that make them uncomfortable.

"I don't want them to be nervous."
"I don't want them to feel awkward."
"I don't want them to be upset."

But sometimes the greatest growth happens just outside their comfort zone.

Group horse activities teach so much more than riding.

🐴 They learn to talk to new people.
🐴 They learn to work alongside others.
🐴 They realise they're not the only one feeling nervous.
🐴 They learn that it's okay to make mistakes.
🐴 They build confidence by doing things they once thought they couldn't.

Shy children don't always need rescuing from uncomfortable situations. Often, they need gentle encouragement, support, and opportunities to realise they are capable.

Confidence doesn't appear overnight. It's built one brave step at a time.

One of the biggest mistakes I see is people buying a new horse and then waiting months before having lessons because they're still "getting to know each other" or getting gear sorted.

The truth is, you're already building your relationship from the moment your horse comes home.

Every interaction is teaching your horse something, and your horse is teaching you something too.

Having lessons early can help:

βœ” Build good habits from the beginning
βœ” Create clear communication between you and your horse
βœ” Prevent misunderstandings from becoming bigger problems
βœ” Give you confidence as you learn each other
βœ” Help your horse settle into their new home

You don't have to have everything figured out before you start lessons.

In fact, that's often when lessons are most valuable.

The beginning of a partnership can shape everything that follows.

Horse Behaviour Insight 🐴

Shutting down and standing still does not always mean a horse is calm.

Sometimes horses become very quiet because they are overwhelmed.

A truly relaxed horse often still:

blinks softly
breathes deeply
looks around calmly
processes information
responds softly

There is a big difference between:
β€œthis horse feels safe”
and
β€œthis horse has stopped trying.”

Learning to recognise that difference changes the way we train completely.
