A Special Thanks....

Today was a day that made me proud to be Commodore of WYC and part of an amazing group of people.
As promoted in our newsletters (and with an SMS reminder during the week), today we conducted the annual vegetation management working bee.
This work is vital for the safe running of events, the safety of pedestrians across our launching ramps, and to improve the spectator experience and views from the Club and balconies.
So it was with a great sense of pride that we welcomed 30-odd members, variously equipped with power and hand tools, ladders, and loads of enthusiasm.
The weather was on our side with a very cold start giving way to a calm, sunny day - perfect for our needs.
We were able to improve the sightlines from the race box and the main club buildings. This job did not exist 20 years ago but the buildup of yet another dune on the foreshore has meant that we are always going to need to monitor the scrub growth. In future years I hope to recruit the Foreshore Committee and local council to assist, as the job is getting bigger every year.
The magnitude of this year's project is evidenced by the size of the cuttings pile - see the photographs. Our previous practice of burning off may be a bridge too far this time around so the committee will investigate professional removal.
I would like particularly to draw attention to the extra work of Matt Leyden in being a lead in organising, and for providing his tipper trailer. Thanks also to Prue Richards - Prue stepped up at short notice to provide a lovely morning tea for the team.
So once again....on behalf of all members and the committee - thanks to all who got involved - it is deeply appreciated and you should be very proud of yourselves.

Bec’s Unhinged Review:
Balnarring

Balnarring is one of those towns you completely forget exists until someone says, “Wanna go to the Heritage?”

Then suddenly you’re in the car because let’s be honest, the Heritage is top notch. The parma bangs, the beers are cold and half the locals have been sitting on the same barstool since the early 2000s.

The rest of Balnarring is a weird mix of horse girls, wineries, rich retirees and people who somehow make buying olives a personality trait. Everyone is either barefoot or wearing RM Williams. There is absolutely no in-between.

The races are basically the Mornington Peninsula Hunger Games. Flys up your nostrils, warm UDLs, cheap fascinators and a crowd yelling at horses like they’re having a domestic dispute.

Then there’s the beach.
Looks peaceful enough until you get in the water and realise the tide is trying to relocate you to Phillip Island. Balnarring swimmers aren’t brave, they’re delusional.

“Just keep left at the sandbar.”

Mate, I can’t even see the fu***ng sandbar.

Blink and you’ve missed the town. Blink twice and you’ve hit a horse. Blink three times and some woman named Pippa is explaining why her rescue greyhound only drinks filtered water.

Balnarring has this vibe where everyone acts like they’ve discovered a secret little paradise nobody knows about.

Relax.
Bittern and Cribby are literally right there.
