⚠️Right, so you all saw the supercell with 8cm hail smash a long damage path last night... Well even bigger more frequent storms are forecast this afternoon and this evening for SEQLD & NENSW!

🔴A surface trough will inject a very hot and humid Westerly airmass along the ranges onto the coast initially during the day. A South Easterly wind change will move North along the NENSW coast as a North Easterly afternoon Sea Breeze front develops which will create a triple point wind convergence. This triple point wind convergence progresses Northwards into SEQLD during the afternoon.
🔴A warm air inversion (CAP) in the low levels will suppress or lid most storm development until midday with break thresholds likely to be achieved from 12pm onwards - especially in NENSW first then into SEQLD. (NOTE: Extreme mid level instability is generating a few high based morning storms in NENSW). Wind shear both speed and directional thresholds through the low to mid levels support the development of mesocyclones (Supercells).

🔴Rapid severe storm development is expected through inland / range areas of NENSW and SEQLD at first with nuclear type cells producing large hail, damaging winds and heavy rainfall in their early stages. A number of these cells will intensify further onto the coastal plain to become Super-cellular producing Giant Hail up to 10cms, Destructive Winds up to 150km/h & Very Intense Rainfall. Storm activity will track North East with some cells tracking in a more Northerly direction riding the wind boundary / triple point. Conditions are generally unfavourable for any tornadoes however one or two can't be completely ruled out being attached to a meso.

🔴So from Grafton to Maryborough including the Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, Brisbane, Ipswich, Logan, Moreton, Hinterland & Valleys, Ranges and possibly just west of the ranges ARE ALL "AREAS" AT RISK. Not everyone will get hit, but you might! That’s the way it rolls…

What are we expecting?

The Bureau of Meteorology advises that Tropical Cyclone Alfred will continue moving towards the southeast today, slightly away from the Queensland coast before slowing down and turning westward, towards the Queensland coast on Tuesday.

Alfred is currently a category 1 cyclone but is expected to intensify to a category 2 cyclone tonight. It is likely to maintain a category 2 intensity as it approaches the southeast Queensland coast late on Thursday.

People between Sandy Cape in Queensland and Grafton in New South Wales should consider what action they will need to take if the cyclone threat increases.

Severe coastal hazards, including abnormally high tides and hazardous surf are expected to continue over northeastern New South Wales coasts, deteriorating further as Alfred begins to move towards the coast from Tuesday onwards. A large and powerful to potentially damaging easterly swell is forecast to extend to northern New South Wales coast today.

Gales with DAMAGING WIND GUSTS to 120 kilometres per hour are expected to develop along northeastern New South Wales coastal and island communities between the Queensland border and Grafton during Wednesday.

Heavy rainfall is forecast for northeastern New South Wales from Wednesday as Alfred approaches the coast. HEAVY to locally INTENSE RAINFALL which may lead to DANGEROUS AND LIFE-THREATENING FLASH FLOODING near and south of the system centre as Alfred approaches and crosses the coast late on Thursday.

This event may change quickly. NSW SES will monitor the situation and update warnings if the situation changes.

When the celestials line up on a dark moon, the east coast and the west coast have cyclones tracking down and one more out near Fiji, the resulting confusion takes a while for magic to translate in the ocean that everyone can understand. Like the spirits of old friends, magic shifts around like lightning and the magic within us all.
The surf would look good today if you had done time out on the edge of the desert. Colliding swells from different directions and residual wind effects.
