With this year's program, we're reverting to the traditional "fundraising" model rather than the model that we trialled last year; with fundraising thresholds being kept respectfully low.

The fundraising element has been re-introduced to the River's Gift run program to ensure that 1) the program registration fees are more affordable for our participants (both with the up-front fee or the weekly payment model), and that 2) River's Gift are able to still financially benefit in such a way that we can contribute funds to our "deliverable objectives"; being scientific research and safe sleep education.

Just 8 more days and we're launching the program - we'd love to see you there!! 💙

Yesterday Marked the 7 year anniversary of Karl and Alex losing River to SIDS. A glimmer of hope was created from a heartbreaking loss as River's gift was created in his honour and funds vital research into how we can end this horrible syndrome. Please join me and find it in your heart to donate $7 for 7 years

Meet our next Winter Warrior, Mark! Mark combines his running with full time work, study and being a dad :)

For the last few years, I’ve finished the Great Ocean Road Half Marathon and taken time off for recovery. Unfortunately, that recovery seems to have lasted until mid to late summer when I’ve had to start training from over a 6-month rest from running. I have got myself ready the last two years with Tash’s help and the wonderful people of the Running Project. This year, I made the decision that I was going to keep running through winter and spring and keep building on my effort and performance of this year.
With Ballarat being so cold and wet during winter, and the days so short it is far too easy to just think I’ll go later or I’ll leave it till tomorrow. With Tash’s and the group’s encouragement and support I’ve managed to keep my running up to 3-4 runs a week regardless of how cold or wet or dark, only missing runs for work or family where time just does not allow runs in the hours in the day.
Its great to see the improvement from session to session and week to week. And if I miss a session or two, I always get a message or call from Tash, not asking me why I haven’t been training, but just checking in to ensure that nothing has happened to me and the program still fits with my lifestyle and goals. And as much as it might be easier to roll over on a cold dark morning than pound out a few or a dozen kms in the dark and sometimes wet, it is a great feeling to finish that, get home and have a hot shower and be mentally charged to get on with whatever comes my way.
Yes, its easy to just put it off or not worry about it, but if we just force ourselves to get out the first few times, it becomes almost part of the daily routine and much easier from that point on. And the benefits from a physical as well as mental and emotional point are worth way more than a little discomfort of getting up early and getting a little cold or wet in the process.
The group of people in the Running Project and Tash herself are always supportive and encouraging and it’s a buzz to get out regardless of weather with this wonderful bunch of people and pound out a few kms."

Let's face it folks the urge to hibernate in Ballarat is strong right now but I am going to introduce you to some people who have done just the opposite. First up we have busy working mum Rachel Ann

For a few years now plenty of people have been telling me that consistency in training is the key to good running. I used to laugh and on cold mornings would roll over and go back to sleep, telling myself I'd get my session done "later". Of course later rarely happened and when the weather warmed up, I'd be desperately trying to regain my fitness ready for the next race.
Eventually I thought I'd listen to what everyone was saying and give this consistency thing a go. Having to fit training in around a husband who runs, a 7 year old daughter and full time work in a job where you're expected to be constantly available, takes some juggling. It means that my runs are most often done in the early mornings. And I mean early, as anyone who follows me on Strava can attest to!
Getting out early means I get to enjoy the best part of the day with few others around. It means I've accomplished something before breakfast and before the day has really started. My days at work are more productive, too and I feel like I have more time in my day.
Nothing can crop up and derail my session as it's already done. I have never regretted an early workout. Yes it's cold, it's dark and it's sometimes wet. Layer up and get it done. I think I'm one of Glimmer Gear's best customers! That post run hot shower is all the more enjoyable when you've run in single digit temperatures, and being able to enjoy a coffee in peace is like a little slice of heaven.
I know what everyone was banging on about with consistent training, now. The PBs speak for themselves. The best part of all is the example I'm setting for my girl. When she gets up on the weekend, she doesn't need to ask her dad "Where's Mummy?" because she already knows the answer. And that's worth more than all the PBs!
