Meet our next Winter Warrior, Mark! Mark combines his running with full time work, study and being a dad :)
For the last few years, I’ve finished the Great Ocean Road Half Marathon and taken time off for recovery. Unfortunately, that recovery seems to have lasted until mid to late summer when I’ve had to start training from over a 6-month rest from running. I have got myself ready the last two years with Tash’s help and the wonderful people of the Running Project. This year, I made the decision that I was going to keep running through winter and spring and keep building on my effort and performance of this year.
With Ballarat being so cold and wet during winter, and the days so short it is far too easy to just think I’ll go later or I’ll leave it till tomorrow. With Tash’s and the group’s encouragement and support I’ve managed to keep my running up to 3-4 runs a week regardless of how cold or wet or dark, only missing runs for work or family where time just does not allow runs in the hours in the day.
Its great to see the improvement from session to session and week to week. And if I miss a session or two, I always get a message or call from Tash, not asking me why I haven’t been training, but just checking in to ensure that nothing has happened to me and the program still fits with my lifestyle and goals. And as much as it might be easier to roll over on a cold dark morning than pound out a few or a dozen kms in the dark and sometimes wet, it is a great feeling to finish that, get home and have a hot shower and be mentally charged to get on with whatever comes my way.
Yes, its easy to just put it off or not worry about it, but if we just force ourselves to get out the first few times, it becomes almost part of the daily routine and much easier from that point on. And the benefits from a physical as well as mental and emotional point are worth way more than a little discomfort of getting up early and getting a little cold or wet in the process.
The group of people in the Running Project and Tash herself are always supportive and encouraging and it’s a buzz to get out regardless of weather with this wonderful bunch of people and pound out a few kms."
