Clubs and volunteers across the Central Highlands are already helping ensure the experiences of our region are represented in Regional Sport Victoria's 2026 Regional Victorian Community Sport Census.

So far, we've heard from 36 clubs and volunteers, providing valuable insights into the opportunities, challenges, and support needs impacting community sport locally.

Some common themes are beginning to emerge:
☑️ Growing pressure on volunteer time and capacity
☑️ Increasing administrative and operational demands on clubs
☑️ A need for practical support that responds to local challenges

These insights will help inform future support, advocacy, and club development initiatives both within our region and across regional Victoria.

To provide more clubs and volunteers with the opportunity to participate, the Census will now close on Sunday 21st June.

If your club hasn't had the opportunity to contribute yet, now is the time.

🌟 Sports Central Proud to be Part of ABC Takeover Ballarat 🌟

Sports Central had the incredible opportunity to be an Ambassador Organisation for the recent ABC Takeover in Ballarat, with our own Caitlin representing our organisation throughout the week.

Working alongside an inspiring group of young people from across Ballarat, Caitlin spent the week co-designing a community project, listening to youth voices, sharing ideas, and empowering the next generation to create positive change in our region.

We were also fortunate to collaborate with an amazing group of fellow ambassadors and organisations who brought their passion and expertise to the program:

🤟 Jesse from Women's Health Grampians
✨ Emma from CAFS
🌞 Laurel from The Lab
⭐️ Sally from Committee for Ballarat
🌻 Clancy from Bees and Blossoms

A huge thank you to the young people who brought their creativity, energy and ideas to the week. It was inspiring to see what can be achieved when we genuinely listen to and collaborate with our community's youth.

At Sports Central, we believe young people should have opportunities to shape the future of their communities, and we're proud to have been part of a program that puts youth voices front and centre.

📣 Why should your club complete the 2026 census?

As part of the 2026 Regional Victorian Community Sport Census, clubs across the Central Highlands have the opportunity to go into the draw to win up to $2,500 in tailored support from Sports Central, with one club selected from each participating region.

We know that every club is different, and the most valuable support is often the support that responds directly to local needs, priorities and challenges.

For clubs in the Central Highlands, this support could include:
👉 Strategic, participation or operational planning
👉 Governance support and committee development
👉 Training and education for club leaders and volunteers
👉 Policy and procedure development and review
👉 Club sustainability and capacity-building initiatives

By taking part in the Census, your club will not only help shape future support and advocacy for community sport but one lucky winner from each participating region will also have the opportunity to access tailored support designed to strengthen their club.

⏳ The Census closes on Sunday 14th June.

📣 Local government plays an important role in strengthening community sport across the Central Highlands.

As the 2026 Regional Victorian Community Sport Census continues to roll out, we’re encouraging our local government partners across the Central Highlands to help ensure clubs and volunteers in your communities are represented.

Community sport contributes significantly to local wellbeing, connection, participation, and liveability - and understanding the experiences of clubs at a grassroots level is critical to shaping future planning, support, and investment across our region.

We invite Ararat Rural City Council, City of Ballarat, Golden Plains Shire Council, Hepburn Shire Council and Pyrenees Shire Council to help amplify the Census through local club networks, newsletters, and community channels to ensure as many local voices as possible are heard.

By contributing to a stronger evidence base, together we can better understand the changing needs of community sport across the Central Highlands and support more informed, locally responsive outcomes into the future.

🙌 This National Volunteer Week, we want to hear from you!

National Volunteer Week is an opportunity to recognise and celebrate the volunteers who keep community sport running across regional Victoria, and it’s also an opportunity to listen.

If you volunteer in community sport, whether as a coach, committee member, team manager, official, or behind the scenes helping your club operate, we want to hear about your club’s experience.

Through the 2026 Regional Victorian Community Sport Census, we’re seeking to better understand the evolving needs of community sporting clubs, including the demands on volunteers’ time, the factors impacting volunteer attraction and retention, and what is needed to help create sustainable, supported, and thriving clubs into the future.

These insights will help strengthen how the sector supports volunteers, builds club capacity, and responds to the changing realities facing grassroots community sport across regional Victoria.
