If you’ve never experienced grief ghosting, you may not realise just how common it is.

Grievers are speaking and it’s time we listened ❤️

Today is R U OK? Day in Australia 💛

So, from a grief perspective, here’s something worth remembering…

If you ask a grieving person, “Are you OK?” be prepared to hear the truth.

They might say no.
They might cry.
They might tell you they’re struggling, even if it’s been months or years since their person died.

You don’t need to fix it.
You don’t need the perfect words.
And you definitely don’t need to remind them of everything they have to be grateful for.

Just listen. Stay curious. Let their answer be what it is.

And perhaps instead of only asking, “Are you OK?” try:

“How has grief been feeling lately?”
“Do you want to talk about them?”

Sometimes being given permission to not be OK is exactly what someone needs 💛

PS: You don’t have to wait until September 10th… ask any day 💛

There’s no emergency when it comes to sorting through someone’s belongings after they die.

What looks like clutter to someone else can hold an entire life for the person grieving.

A shirt still smells like them.
A receipt brings back a memory.
A pair of shoes reminds you they’re never walking through the door again.

And every item seems to come with a decision you never wanted to make.

Keep it? Donate it? Give it away?
Throw it out?

It can be an incredibly emotionally heavy job.

Some people are ready quickly.
Others take months or years. Some keep certain things forever.

None of those choices tell you how well someone is grieving.

So unless there’s a genuine reason something needs to be dealt with urgently, let the griever set the timeline.

Their belongings can wait ❤️

Nobody warns you that when someone you love dies, you can lose living people too.

Some people don’t know what to say.
Some are uncomfortable with your grief.
Some expect you to be “back to normal” long before you are.

And some just… disappear.

It can be one of the most painful secondary losses of grief… realising that the people you thought would be beside you simply aren’t.

Have you experienced grief ghosting? 👻

Sometimes grief gets blamed for far too much.

In 2021, four years after Tony died, I left a workplace after relentless bullying had pushed me to breaking point.

As part of my WorkCover claim, I was assessed by a psychiatrist. But the moment Tony’s death came up, everything changed.

He dismissed what had happened at work and told me:

“It’s just your grief. You shouldn’t still be grieving after four years. Grief should only last for six months. You need to move on.”

So my claim was rejected, my grief was blamed and my traumatic experience was erased.

And this happens to grievers far too often.

We’re upset by someone’s behaviour? It’s our grief.

We react to an insensitive comment? It’s our grief.

We stand up for ourselves? We must be “stuck” in grief.

But, sometimes grief isn’t the problem. Ignorance is.

If a griever tells you something hurts, believe them. Listen, learn and please do better.
