Under 11s Vs EGC Gold

Our Under 11 team continued their impressive season with a strong 5-1 victory over EGC Gold. Lucas controlled much of the play throughout the match, with Heidi Shepherd and Jonny Hargreaves proving difficult for the opposition defence to contain. Heidi was outstanding across the ground, finishing with a hat-trick, while Jonny added two goals of his own.

The midfield group of Jonte Pougnault, Kushil Niwas, Noah Gambino and Ruby Hargreaves worked tirelessly to move the ball into attack, creating plenty of scoring opportunities. Jonte and Noah both showed great versatility as they rotated between midfield and attacking roles.

A highlight of the match was the defensive work of Annabelle Rowland. Annabelle continually shut down EGC attacks and celebrated her goal-saving efforts with as much enthusiasm as a goal scorer, recognising that preventing goals is every bit as important as scoring them.

Under 14 vs Blaze Orange
The Lucas HC Under 14 team faced a strong Blaze Orange outfit and produced a determined performance built on teamwork and resilience. Much of the match was played in the Lucas HC defensive half, however the team remained organised and continued to work hard for one another throughout the contest.

Goalkeeper Seb Pougnault was outstanding, making a series of important saves under pressure, while Oakley Oxlade and Morgan Edgar worked tirelessly in defence to help repel repeated attacking raids. Jordan Shepherd covered plenty of ground at both ends of the field, while Noah Gambino showed great enthusiasm and determination in his full-field hockey debut.

Whenever Lucas HC moved forward, Heidi Shepherd looked dangerous in attack and was rewarded with a goal. The way the team continued to compete despite spending extended periods defending was especially commendable, remaining firmly in the contest until the closing stages of the game.

Lucas HC was also well served by experienced fill-in coaches Ian Edgar and Kerryn Parkinson, who had the team organised and working together throughout the match. Blaze Orange eventually recorded a 5-1 win after scoring three late goals in the final minutes, however there were plenty of positives for Lucas HC to take from the performance.

Goals: Heidi Shepherd.

Under 16 vs EGC
The Lucas HC Under 16s were involved in an entertaining and closely contested match against EGC, with neither side able to gain a decisive advantage for much of the game.

Caleb Hiller opened the scoring with one of the highlights of the day, carrying the ball along the baseline and across the face of goal before finishing with a skilful backhand flick. EGC responded to level the scores, setting up a tense contest as both teams worked hard to create opportunities while remaining disciplined in defence.

Henry Beechey continued his consistent season, contributing strongly in both defence and midfield, while Lucas Jones played one of his best matches of the year on the wing. Hunter Knoop worked tirelessly through the midfield and played an important role in creating attacking opportunities for his teammates.

With the scores locked at 1-all late in the match, Lucas HC found the breakthrough. A well-worked attacking move saw Knoop direct a clever through pass into the path of Xavier Parkinson, who was perfectly positioned at the left post to convert and give Lucas HC the lead.

A special mention goes to the Under 14 players who backed up after their earlier match and made valuable contributions. Their effort, combined with a strong team performance across the field, helped Lucas HC hold on for a hard-fought 2-1 victory.

Women vs Blaze Orange
The Lucas HC Women took on Blaze Orange in a tightly contested match that showcased the continued development and competitiveness of the group.

Up forward, Zara Staggard and Ange Williams continually presented as an option in attack, with Lucas HC creating a number of promising scoring chances throughout the contest. Despite the efforts of the Lucas HC forwards, Blaze Orange were able to find the only goal of the match in what remained a close battle right through to the final whistle, taking out a narrow 1-0 victory.

A highlight of the day was the Lucas HC debut of Ange Williams, who took the field alongside daughter Emily in a special family moment. Although Lucas HC narrowly missed out on the result, there were plenty of positives to take from a performance that demonstrated determination, teamwork and resilience.

The second quarter saw Lucas remain on top, with Michael Churcher, in his Lucas HC debut, controlling the middle of the pitch. The highlight of the match came in the second quarter, when Lachie Hargreaves took possession of the ball at the half-line, before weaving through the Blaze defence to convert a spectacular goal. This was the end of the Lucas highlights, as they struggled to link up going into attack in the second half. Round 2 Match Reports

Round 2 of the Hockey Ballarat winter season saw our junior teams hit the pitch for the first time, giving us plenty of action to recap in this week’s match reports.

Under 11s Vs Blaze Yellow
The most exciting part of watching our Under 11s in their first game of the season is seeing some of youngest members playing their first ever competitive game of hockey! This season, we saw two debutants take the pitch in Evora Davis and Ruby Hargreaves. It was great to see both players in the thick of the action, being very constructive for Lucas. Heidi Shepherd and Noah Gambino were both busy for Lucas in the midfield, while Jonte Pougnault provided great drive into attack. Annabelle Rowland, Jonny Hargreaves and Kushil Niwas, playing their second seasons, showed the benefit of experience, as they all had an impact on this game. Exciting times ahead for this group! The final score was a 2-1 win to Lucas. Goals: Heidi Shepherd, Jonny Hargreaves.

Under 14s Vs EGC
Our Under 14 group played out a tight and entertaining match against EGC. There was plenty of end-to-end hockey in this game, as both teams linked up well to move the ball from defence into attack. The Lucas defence, led by Goalie, Seb Pounault, Ryan Parkinson and Morgan Edgar were kept busy, continually repelling the EGC forward play and setting up the likes of Jordan Shepherd, Mack Hargreaves and Mietta Gambino to move the ball into attack. Lucas strikers, Oakley Oxlade and Heidi Shepherd proving to be a headache for the EGC defence with some searching leads and creative play. Lucas taking out a 3-2 win in a very even game. Under 16s Vs EGC
Our Under 16 team also took on EGC in what was one of those fabled games of two halves. The first half saw EGC take control, converting twice to apply scoreboard pressure on Lucas. Hunter Knoop, Zara Staggard and Harley Shepherd were industrious for Lucas through the midfield, while Caleb Hiller and Lucas Jones were busy in attack. A Lucas goal just before the half-time whistle saw Lucas go into the break at 2-all, and giving them a chance to reset going into the second half. The second half saw more contributors for Lucas, with Reuben Pougnault and Lachie Hargreaves stepping it up and Henry Beechey moving into a more offensive role. The final result a 4-2 win to Lucas. Goals: Hunter Knoop 2, Jordan Shepherd, Lachie Hargreaves.

Div 1 Men Vs Ducks
The Lucas Div 1 Men did not have to wait long on Sunday morning to make their mark, taking on Ducks in the 9am game. Following on from their Round 1 match, the Lucas Men were able to link up well throughout the match, with players focusing on letting the ball do the work. In torrid weather, Lucas hit the scoreboard early through Hayden Staggard. The Lucas midfield were all able to find plenty of space, with Lachie Hargreaves, James Van der Schyff and Fraser Cullen all getting plenty of the ball. The rebound out of defence was another feature of this match with Luke Pougnault, Damon Shepherd, Glyn Kendall and Henry Beechey all prolific. Lucas taking out a very solid 5-0 win in the wet. Goals: Tom Batchelor, Fraser Cullen, James Van der Schyff, Hayden Staggard, Jason Hargreaves.
