A remarkable piece of Balgownie history returns home. 🖤🤍

Today, Balgownie Rangers FC was honoured to receive a very special piece of the club’s history — a hand-engraved pocket watch originally presented to William Shaw, who played for Balgownie throughout the 1890s.

According to the Shaw family, the watch was awarded to William as a Best & Fairest, although the exact year in which it was presented is currently unknown.

The watch features an extraordinary hand-engraved scene depicting Balgownie F.C., including a Balgownie footballer and an illustration of what is believed to represent Judy Masters Park.

William played during a successful period in Balgownie’s early history, with the club winning multiple honours throughout the 1890s. William can be seen on the far right of the historic Balgownie team photograph included in this post.

More than a century later, the watch has now made its way back to the club thanks to William’s great-grandchildren, Geoff Shaw and Penny Sechi, who generously donated this remarkable family heirloom to BRFC.

Geoff himself went on to achieve an extraordinary sporting career, representing Australia in rugby union and captaining the Wallabies. His contribution to sport is also recognised locally, with Geoff Shaw Oval here in the Illawarra named in his honour.

From one generation of Illawarra sporting history to another, we are incredibly grateful to Geoff, Penny and the Shaw family for entrusting this special piece of their family history to Balgownie Rangers.

A piece of our history. Balgownie Rangers FC — preserving the past, building the future. 🖤🤍
