Less is more
I don’t have 3 plus years, with 4 classes a week to teach you to be a blue belt BJJer (Brazilian jui jitsu)
To be a blue belt in BJJ you need to learn and master 70-90 moves
You need to be able to get to the right position, do the move and learn to problem solve under pressure. And to your need roughly 10000 repetitions.
If you did 2 classes a week for 50 weeks
on average we teach 3 techniques a lesson, you practice each one 10 -30 times, the lesson are similiar for the week so you get 60 to 80 chance to improve
you have learnt roughly 50 moves in 4 months
lets say we repeat the same techniques every 4 months
however you only retain 10 moves of those 50 and use only about 5, until you get enough reps throughs.
Then you start to Wrestle (applying what you know).
I have great a mount bar but seem to be caught in everyone’s guard,
So now you are spending time learning to pass the guard, but my mount arm bar is invincible. Yes I got some neebie white belt, bingo I am on top and mount arm bar is perfect. Switch partners and the big guy who got me squashed into a small package, is not letting do my super awesome mount arm bar, First you learn to survive all submissions from guard, learn not to get swept and then learn to pass, however class may be focused on mount attacks. You learn some stuff by experience and necessity.
Welcome to wonderful world of BJJ, and you start master the guard pass, side control and hold the mount and now you can apply your arm bar, its not working well people are starting to defend it. But you are growing but it taken 6 months.
Now we start running into body types, personality, personal preferences and game play.
When I first started learnt BJJ I was white most people I wrestled with were bigger than me and blue belts. So I developed a guard game in order to combat them, guard stopped them getting on top, but that was a lot of work to get to that level. Lots of getting beaten, tapping out, starting again, refining moves, learning counters and timing.
Now switch to self defence, I am not looking to rack up points or submit my partner. I am looking to get out, get up and go home. I also don’t have to play only legal BJJ techniques
Yes you need a basic understanding of ground tactics and basic BJJ moves. Can I hit him?, can I kick him?, can I elbow him?, can I knee him? can I rip his face off?. This is simple moves, now we train to apply this from any position. So I teach you ground survival in 8-10 hours not 3 years. Remember I am not sending someone to the world BJJ championships, different training required.
Stay safe, and tune in for ground survival meets BJJ practicitor. Now what.
