SAMBAR BREEDING BEHAVIOUR
Gooday Fellow Sambar Enthusiasts,
After applying the overlays for the prevailing weather, hunting pressure and location of the best food, I moved to a vantage point that allowed me to glass the spot where the overlays told me the deer were most likely to be.
As I glassed with my Vixen Artes J 8x42 binos I spotted movement and sure enough a young 2.5 year old stag was shadowing a mature hind. Typical of sambar hinds, she was moving in virtual slow motion and the stag was glued to her genitalia. She may have been coming into estrus as she didn’t move away from his advances which they usually do if they are not receptive. However, receptive hinds typically raise their tail and expose their va**na to the stag as photos in The Hunt Smart System book clearly show. Hinds will only stand and enable a stag to mount when they are in the 24 hour period of peak estrus which is when the egg is ripe for fertilisation. At all other times if a stag attempts to mount, a hind simply walks away to prevent mounting. During the 30 minutes I observed them the stag did not attempt to mount. It is quite normal for young stags to mo**st hinds that are not in estrus, behaviour I have observed and photographed several times.
On every training course participants observe the behaviour of unalarmed sambar, sometimes for up to an hour or so. Many videos of sambar that have been observed on my training course are on my Secrets of the Sambar page and on my Secrets of the Sambar YouTube channel.
I am conducting my 3-day Hunt Smart Training Courses this year, but it is highly likely that this will be the last year I will be running them so if you have been planning to attend, this year is likely to be your last chance.
There are just 2 positions available on my Hunt Smart Training Course commencing 1pm Friday 15th May, 1 position available on the course commencing 29th May and 2 positions on course commencing 12th June.
I am holding courses every 2 weeks during May, June, July. My last course for 2026 and possibly forever commences 7th August.
Dates and the number of positions available on each course are on our website www.sambardeer.com
Our website provides all details including cost and the more than 70 Success Stories sent to me by past Hunt Smart Training Course participants.
Go to www.sambardeer.com for full details including reviews and cost of “The Hunt Smart System” book and Volumes 1, 2 and 3 plus the 3 and 4 book sets.
If you are unable to attend my course, then do yourself a favour and buy our 464-page, full colour, A4 format, Hunt Smart System book. Countless sambar hunters have been instantly successful after applying knowledge gleaned from this book. The following success story from Michael is a text-book example.
Hi Errol,
Came bush last night and I walked the rim using the “sight n go” method as explained in your Hunt Smart System book.
Then I stopped and glassed the spot where the overlays in your book told me they should be in the prevailing conditions and there they were – two magnificent Sambar stags ruminating just 46.9metres away.
Both in velvet so I left them for my projects this year.
I’m still shaking. Spent a good hour watching them.
Thanks for your info. I am so chuffed to be able to do this stuff.
