A 60 in F-Class is what our shooters are aiming for.

At 300 yards the 6 ring is 65mm and the X is 32mm.

It's the benchmark of a perfect score for the detail, but getting there takes skill, consistency, and plenty of practice.

Every week on the range is another chance to improve. ๐ŸŽฏ

The range is generally open each Saturday from 9.30am until 5pm. See the main info post for more details but if you are thinking of coming down, ideally let us know in advance by contacting the club captain but if you do just decide to come on the day, earlier is better. We typically wrap up just after lunch and the range is probably going to be closed by 2pm.

Anyone aged 12 or over can come and shoot at the range. If you are using a club rifle, the recoil can be significant for younger shooters so each participant is assessed individually to ensure a safe and comfortable experience is had. Having said that, our target rifles are quite heavy compared to standard hunting rifles so recoil is not a problem for most people.

No. We have club rifles for guest use and ammunition is purchased via the club if this is something you are interested in. If you become a member and decide to shoot regularly, getting your own rifle (and license) will become something you will want to do.

Details are in the main club post, but we shoot disciplines supported by the Victorian Rifle Association. These are Target Rifle, F Class and Sporter Class. Pistols and shotguns are not shooting we support. You will need a dedicated pistol or clay target club for those shooting disciplines.

We shoot from 300 to 1000 yards using an e-target system (ShotMarker).

Also called a "string" sometimes, it is a round of shooting that gives you a score. At a club match which we shoot most Saturday's we shoot two details. Each detail consists of two sighting shots and 10 shots that count towards your score.

Scoring depends on what discipline you are shooting, but for F Class in Australia, the highest score is a 6 with an extra separate count for super centers which are another ring inside the 6 ring. TR and Sporter are similar except they don't have a 6 ring - the 6 is there "super center" or V-Bull as it is called in TR. https://nraa.com.au/nraa-news/updated-standard-shooting-rules-effective-1-january-2026/ has all the information on the fine details.

Subject to caliber and energy restrictions, yes you can. Get in touch with us if you want to do this and we will find out what you have and if it is suitable. Apart from range related restrictions, we need to make sure your rifle can shoot far and accurately enough at the distances we shoot. 1000 yards is a long way and many smaller calibers and standard hunting rifles will not shoot accurately at long range. There is the risk as well of damaging the scoring equipment so there are a number of factors we look at. We do not allow semi or fully automatic rifles even if you have the appropriate license.

Most club members are using 308 Wi******er and for F-Class, a scope with at least 40x magnification. For Sporter, 6.5 Creedmoor is a popular choice. Generally any bolt action rifle with at least 10x magnification that with a caliber between 6-8mm is going to be OK for most shooting. 223 Re*****on is a supported caliber in the VRA rules for a variety of disciplines but practically most people wonโ€™t use it beyond 600 yards.

Another windy one today but we had some new shooters come and give it a try with some very respectable scores given the gusty conditions. Always great to see some new faces.

The Bacchus Marsh Rifle Club is a sporting target shooting rifle club in which the competition is shot, typically prone, at distances from from 300 to 1000 yards.

We shoot under the Victorian Rifle Association Standard Shooting Rules (SSRs) that define the following disciplines:

๐™๐™–๐™ง๐™œ๐™š๐™ฉ ๐™๐™ž๐™›๐™ก๐™š (๐™๐™). This is the OG target discipline, using slings and shooting jackets and critically, iron or peep sites. Quite the challenge at 1000 yards. Calibers are restricted to .223 Re*****on or .308 Wi******er (5.56/7.62 NATO) with a 155 grain projectile.

There are three sub-disciplines here:
- F Standard using any centre fire rifle calibre in either .223 Re*****on or .308 Wi******er with a 155 grain projectile. Unlike TR, scopes are allowed and we use bipods.
- FTR is very similar to F Standard, the main difference is that you can use a heavier than 155 grain projectile and the overall weight of the rifle is less.
- F Open. This is the F1 of this class of shooting. Any calibre up to 8mm is permitted and any bullet weight, typically competitors use specialised front rests and the rifle weight is up to 10kg.

Sporter is the newest and fastest growing addition to the shooting disciplines governed by the VRA. It has been designed to allow new shooters to get into the sport using equipment that they may already have and use for hunting.

Scopes up to 20x are allowed, any calibre up to 8mm and any bullet weight allowed. Bipods can be used but need to be the standard hunting type of bipod vs the more specialised ones used in F Class.

There are two variations. Sporter Standard and Sporter Open. The main difference is that in Standard, the rifle must be as-is from the factory. Any custom modifications push it into Sporter Open.

There are (of course) more rules than what I have listed here, but the rest can be found in the VRA SSRs which are publicly available on the web and a link to this can be found in our FAQ pinned post.

The last thing to mention is that most ranges have muzzle energy restrictions; and we are no exception. While your 300 Win Mag is probably fine, you won't be able to shoot a 338 Lapua Magnum. Contact the club for specific limitations if you have any concerns.

BMRC like all VRA affiliated clubs, is its own independent club and follows a typical club process for new members.
If you think you might be interested in membership, the best thing to do is to contact our club captain or leave a message here on the club page and arrange to come down to check it out. Giving us a heads up that you are interested in coming allows us to prep for your visit and get you started in the smoothest way possible. The club has rifles you can use for both TR and F Class and can supply match grade ammunition. Our club rifles are not fancy but they do shoot and we regularly have visitors posting decent scores on their first visits under instruction. As we are a fully licensed range, you don't need a fi****ms license to come and give it a go. If you have your own setup and want to try Sporter, you are more than welcome to bring your rifle down and give it a go - subject to the restrictions mentioned above)

Once you've come along for a few weeks and got to know the other members, the new membership application is then ratified by the rifle club committee.

Our Range is only open on Saturdays with shooting generally starting between 10:30am and Midday. Per our range license, all shooting must be completed by 5:00pm. Typically members get to the range around 09:30am to set up and on most days we are all wrapped up by around 2pm. You can just drop in unannounced to have a look, but if you do, be aware the gates most likely will be locked by 3pm on most Saturdays and everyone will have headed home.

The range near the Werribee Gorge, access on McCormacks Road on the Western side of Bacchus Marsh, Drive up the McCormacks road hill and you will notice a gate on the right side (with Red Flag) just before the bridge over the rail line, go through the gate and follow the track that run parallel with train line. It can be tricky to spot the first time, but Google Maps does show it correctly. Access to the club is via an access track next to the train line, be warned, it is pretty rough.

Yesterday was Anzac Day at the club.

These days the club has a 100% sport focus, but when it was founded in 1868, it was a civilian militia managed by the defence department. After federation, clubs like Bacchus Marsh and many others around the country effectively formed an army reserve of trained marksmen and alongside light horse groups were the training grounds for so many young Australians who took part in the Gallipoli campaign.

Although ANZAC troops were not managed well during that campaign, they still earned a reputation as fearsome marksmen and it is sobering to think that despite the failure of that campaign, that the outcome for our troops would likely have been so much worse if it wasn't for the training and skills they developed at clubs like ours.

It doesn't take much digging to find one of our past members who paid the ultimate price for King and Country.

Australia entered WW1 on August 4 1914, and on August 28, one of our 19 year old members, Alfred (or Arthur) Hine enlisted. Alfred was the son of local farming family from Waddell St in Bacchus Marsh. Less than a year later, on 21 May 1915 after being wounded in action twice previously, he was wounded again at Gallipoli. He died of those wounds on a hospital ship bound for England and was buried at sea. https://vwma.org.au/explore/people/266579

Ironically our annual ANZAC prize meet was postponed as an indirect result of another war in the middle east, causing the travel costs for a lot of our visitors to be prohibitive.
Nevertheless, the local club members turned out and had another classic experience at our notoriously fickle and difficult range.

Lest we forget.
