On the surface, it looks like a group of children spending their summer in the Chinese countryside, helping farmers and learning where their food comes from.

They dig potatoes, carry firewood, feed pigs, cook meals and handle other daily farm chores.

But these children aren't simply visiting relatives.

Their parents paid thousands of yuan to send them there.

Across parts of China, so-called “hardship camps” have attracted parents who want their children to experience a tougher rural lifestyle, away from phones, air conditioning and many everyday comforts.

Some programs use work-point systems, with children expected to complete assigned tasks each day.

At one camp reported by Chinese media, failing to earn enough points could mean getting only boiled potatoes for a meal.

Videos from the programs show some children exhausted and crying while working.

Parents supporting the idea say the goal isn't punishment. They want their children to understand physical work, become more independent and appreciate what their families provide.

It’s an old idea of teaching through hardship, repackaged as a paid summer camp.

Whether a few difficult days can actually teach that lesson is another question.

Boxing has endured nine tragic days with three deaths involving people who never reached 40.

Prichard Colón was 33. Hayden Panettiere, the mother of Wladimir Klitschko's daughter, was 36. Two-weight world champion Zolani Tete was 38.

Within nine days, all three were gone. 🕊️🥊
