Throw back to 2022 when I had the opportunity to do a pad session with Youssef Boughanem leading up to his fight on the Gold Coast. I was 55 yrs old here out of shape and blowing hard! In this clip I suggested that he not always block the counter hook but to lean back, make it miss and create the opening for the right cross. He did it seamlessly, so quick and strong he caught me off balance. Had to pause for a second to laugh to myself, if he wasn’t hitting the pads I was on my butt. Thats what I love about true freestyle pad work though, it is just a free flowing conversation where you adjust on the fly and add to the flow to keep things progressing. MECHANICS VS MASS: HOLDING YOUR GROUND. When you’re standing across from a heavy puncher like my student here, your instinct is to back away or pull your head out of line, but at 59 years old I rely on skeletal alignment, structural bracing and positioning to absorb the impact safely and stay ready to counter. This video isn’t about a tough guy. It’s about decades of mat experience and understanding how to protect your body so you can stay in the game for the long haul. I’ve had a bad habit in the past of giving away too much of my time for free, but I want to properly pass this knowledge down to the next generation of fighters and coaches who want physical longevity in this sport. Starting July 20I’ll be sharing a daily 10 minute video breakdown of my personal movement habits, structural defence, and instinctive freestyle pad work.
