Tenax Ride

Tenax Ride The Tenax Ride is a group of bike riders. We mostly ride our road bikes on Beach Road and other key road cycling destinations around Melbourne. All are welcome.

Our rides have steady, set speeds, a welcoming and friendly atmosphere and a focus on teamwork. What sets this ride apart is that it is broken into several clearly defined speed groups to cater for all levels of rider, but it starts and finishes in the same place so that friends can come together, ride at their own level and then regroup afterwards for a coffee. Tenax means 'staying steady', and t

hat describes this ride. We’re aiming for steady speed over the distance. The emphasis is on fun, socially athletic riding that allows people to extend their skills and fitness in a friendly and supportive environment. The standard speed groups are 22 kilometres per hour average, 25 kph, 28 kph, 30 kph, 32 kph and ‘fast’. Groups may or may not exist on the day depending on the number of riders and their speed preferences. Our primary ride leaves seven:am cafe (155 Bay Street, Port Melbourne) at 7.30 every second Saturday morning. This ride goes the length of Beach Road (turning around at Mordialloc, except for the 22 kph group which turns at the Beaumaris), then back to seven:am cafe for breakfast, coffee and a catch up afterwards. The total distance is 60 kilometres (except for the 22 kph group which does just under 45 kms). We also run other rides in the ‘off’ weekends. We’ll often head to Mount Eliza for a longer ride or Kinglake for a taste of the hills. We also run some rail trail and off road events and attend other ride events such as the Around the Bay as a group. Less experienced riders should start with the 22 kph or 25 kph speed groups to get used to riding in a bunch and to introduce yourself to the ride. Apart from the ‘fast’ group, all speed groups must aim for their set average speed, although the speed at each point may be higher or lower depending on conditions such as wind. All riders are encouraged to have a speedo on their bike. All you need is a roadworthy bike with one or preferable two bottle cages (with bottles!). Most will be riding road bikes but it is by no means necessary. We have a ride or event most weeks, so if you can’t make it this time, the next event isn’t far away. Check out our Facebook Group (https://www.facebook.com/groups/tenaxride/) for the most up to date info. Note: The Tenax Ride is a casual group ride. We accept no liability for any consequence of attending the ride although we'll take credit for your big smile and healthy body. For this reason, riders are very strongly encouraged to become Bicycle Network members to take advantage of the insurance included in the membership, for the protection of yourselves and other riders.

Some of you will recognise this road as the Acheron Way, that was a stage in the Rally of Melbourne. A different kind of ride to what you are used to, but will as scenic

Hi all,
If riding in the dandenongs please ensure you’re not wearing all dark clothing. Also make sure you have a front and rear light and they are working.

I live out here and the number of cyclists on the road this morning in dark clothing with no lights in the fog was appalling.

It’s for your own safety.

Happy birthday Spencer from all of you Tenax friends

An important thing to get behind. Enough is enough!

Enough is enough – we want action ! The Kew Boulevard is one of Melbourne’s most popular cycling locations and about 18 months ago, someone who clearly doesn’t like cyclists started dropping tacks into the bike lanes. At first, the cycling community simply groaned and assumed it was a one off/tempo…

Major achievements need celebrating and sharing. I got my 7th stamp today to finish the 7 Peaks Challenge.

6 months ago I had this vague idea I might get the passport and do one or two of the climbs. And then single-Minded Sam kicked it.

But I couldn't have got to the top of Hotham today without the support and encouragement of so many wonderful Tenax peeps along the way.

Kevin Goodall - you helped me up my first real climb less than 16 months ago

Heidi - you never had any doubt and you rode with me up my first Peak, Lake Mountain, so I could prove to myself I could do one

Henry - of Ye of little faith, who was there for my first attempt and my last stamp plus a heap along the way and always with a kind word when needed

Kristen, Will, Andre, Rob - for being there for my first stamp. And waiting at the top of Buller for an hour so we could have the photo!

Vanessa - for being my cycling wife and showing me how to smile the way up a hill, and also sharing Garry's secret of thinking yourself up the hill

Reese - for making the tip to Hotham this weekend just to support me up the hill today and having a slide out on the way....eek!

Andrew, Scott, Richard, Graeme, Kevin and anyone else I have forgotten - for being there with an encouraging word and a smile and keep going Sam

Matt - for telling me to harden up ;)

So, I'll be back next year to do it all over again. But only if I have the pleasure of the additional company of Alex, David, Daryl and Kara.

The Tenax Ride is Australia’s friendliest road ride. Our aim is to make it easy for anyone to get into road riding. We’re a very welcoming group that makes sure no one has to ride alone! Our rides have steady, set speeds, a friendly atmosphere and a focus on teamwork.

Our main ride happens every second Saturday morning, leaving from cafe:seven am in Port Melbourne, heading down to Mordialloc and then returning for breakfast and coffee. It’s a 60 kilometre round trip. Here’s the map: http://goo.gl/maps/etptD.

We arrive at the cafe at 7.15 am and roll out at 7.30 am sharp. We call these our ‘integer rides’ because they’re numbered. The 1st was Tenax Ride 1, the 2nd Tenax Ride 2 and so on. On Sundays and other weekends, we’re often run different events, which may go to different locations. We’ve done some awesome mountain biking, track riding and slow social riding as a group.

One of the main things that sets us apart is our clearly defined speed groups. At the start of the ride, we arrange our riders into set speed groups, each of which commit to riding at a certain average speed. This means that if you know that you’re comfortable at that speed, then that group will be at your pace. You won’t get dropped as you’ll be riding with riders of a similar speed and ability at the agreed pace.

Our standard speed groups are 22 kilometres per hour (kph), 25 kph, 28 kph and 32 kph. We’ll often have one group that is defined as ‘fast’, who will typically average 34 to 36 kph. We encourage all riders to start with the 22, 25 or 28 kph groups. Faster groups will definitely run a paceline. Slower groups will likely do rolling ‘social’ turns, depending on the ability of the group. The 22 kph group will usually ride Port Melbourne to Beaumaris and return, doing 40 kilometres.

You don’t need to register or sign up to ride with us. There’s no cost. All you need is a roadworthy bike. It will probably be a road bike, but that’s not necessary. Our rides are self-supported, so you’ll need your basic toolkit, pump, spare tubes, water, etc.

I’m looking forward to riding with you!
