ProVelo Super League Demands Analysis ๐ฅ
The delivered every style of racing - criteriums, road races, time trials, even the longest one day race in the Southern Hemisphere - yet the physiological demands remained remarkably consistent ๐
Across multiple male athletes we coach, we found that an average of 46% of race time was spent above Critical Power (CP), particularly when scoring points. Thatโs nearly half the racing drawing from W Prime (Wโ) reserves - the finite anaerobic energy capacity available for repeated efforts above critical power ๐
Itโs a reflection of the constantly aggressive nature of the series: stop-start attacking, responding to splits, corner exits, or late moves - all requiring efforts well above CP, and the ability to repeat them with minimal recovery.
This style of racing continuously clocked up total time above CP throughout the seriesโก๏ธ
One of the most interesting findings? ๐
Two athletes, with very different physiological profiles, who both consistently scored points in different ways, spent almost identical percentages of time in each intensity zone. It shows that regardless of rider type or strategy, success in this series meant tolerating time above CP โ again and again ๐
Even in the longer races, such as and , racing didnโt settle into a steady rhythm. Aggressive racing rarely stopped - it just came with more fatigue ๐จ๐ผโ๐ฌ
