Key training adaptations can take years of consistency to develop properly ๐
Smart athletic development and longer exposure to training causes the key differences between Junior/U23 and World-Tour level performance.
These studies followed elite and World Tour level cyclists across entire seasons and up to 6 years of development, showing gradual increases in training load, durability and performance over time.
A lot of the key physiological changes linked to endurance performance - mitochondrial density, capillarisation, substrate utilisation, lactate clearance and fatigue resistance - are slow adaptations that require repeated exposure to training stress over long periods of time ๐
Many physiological markers such as VO2max, short-duration power and even training intensity distribution can look relatively similar between elite juniors/U23 riders, and WorldTour athletes.
The key differences between the categories comes within the ability to maintain performance after big workloads and accumulated fatigue.
As a result, is hugely important for success that long term development is managed well.
Above all - consistency over time, enjoyment, and repeated exposure to smart training will be better for athletic development than any specific session or minor intervention โ
