NESSI presents: a longsword seminar on the 27th/28th of June from 9am to 5pm both days. Cost is $100 for the weekend, or $65 a day. To secure your spot, or for any enquiries please send an email to [email protected]

Alex Roberson is a Meyer and Lichtenauer coach with over thirteen years’ experience. Having trained and competed in every Australian state, he took to Europe on a four-month odyssey where he trained, coached, and competed across the breadth of the Euro zone. In his competitive career he has achieved over 400 tournament victories and has podiumed over 40 times.

With a passion for providing modern coaching solutions to historical fencing, Alex’s pedagogy provides a ground up approach to transitioning technical skills into the chaos of sparring. His programs have developed a competitive team which is widely recognized to be one of the strongest and most consistent in the country.

NESSI members are gearing up to do 3,307 pushups in June to raise awareness and money for mental health in Australia. This target represents the 3,307 people who took their own lives in Australia in 2024 (the most recent stats).

Funds raised will go to Lifeline to support much-needed mental health services and initiatives in Australia. Any donation, big or small, is really appreciated!

This weekend four of our fighters made the trek to Brisbane to compete in Vanguard Swordsmanship Academy's inaugural Oak N' Iron beginner longsword tournament. We're so grateful for the incredibly warm welcome, and to Vanguard for putting this tournament on. All our fighters walked away with wins, with Marcus coming in 4th overall - after a solid 4 months of training in the sport no less! Allana received the Purnell Award for a spectacular and fun boss fight. Big shout out to the Sword Fighter crew for the brilliant boss fighters, and thanks again to everyone involved in bringing this wonderful event together. Here's to the future of fencing!

Meet our instructor Ed, who’ll be teaching sidesword throughout May.

Who are you?

I’m Ed, but prefer to be called Fleet (a name that I earned rather than was given).
Dedicated dad and recently married, so still walking on air.

What are you teaching/what’s your focus?

I focus on bolognese systems, Marozzo, Dall’Agocchie, Mancilono, the mysterious Anonimo, and study the language too for a bit of extra understanding. Due to an injury in my sword arm I’ve dropped a hand and focused solely on side sword and dagger (independent of each other) of late, but still love a bash with the feders.
Truth be told, I’ll have a go at anything, and when things are well and truely back on course will be back on the long arms.

How long have you been involved in HEMA?

I started as a re-enactor, but saw the light and made a switch around 2022.
It’s better this way.
But I’ve been involved in historical stuff on and off since 16 years of age (good god, more than half my life) and supplemented the time in between with Muay Thai, which included training in Rawai.
I think I just like to fight people.

What do you want new members to know?

In general or for swords?
For swords: master the fundamentals, else you have nothing. It doesn’t matter what style you do, if you can’t guard or work your feet then you’ll be in for a rough time. Fancy plays can come later.
Be a fortress and command your ground, after that you can become a swashbuckling adventurer.

In general: write a will and talk to your loved ones about what they and you want after you die. It’s a stressful time and will be made easier by not having to make big decisions about what to do or how inheritance will be carried out. (I work in the field so it’s not related to any recent family dramas or the like).
Death, she comes for us all, and we can’t always predict when she will come.

24/04/2026

There will be no class tomorrow as it’s ANZAC Day.
Our next class will be the 2nd of May at the Armidale PCYC for anyone who wants to come along.
