Following on from my previous post..

Summer is over and many parents pause swimming lessons and move onto other sports over winter. But did you know that according to Royal Life Saving Australia, last Easter was the deadliest on record, with a rise in drowning incidents across the holiday period. With families travelling, visiting new environments, and spending more time near water, children are often exposed to unfamiliar risks. For more information on who, and where drownings occurred please click here

Easter is a fun and exciting time for children but it also brings increased risks around water.

That’s why water safety starts with you.

In the lead-up to Easter, small reminders can make a big impact. We encourage parents to consistently share:
• Always have an adult actively watching around water
• Never go near water without permission
• Pool gates must always be shut properly
• Empty containers like buckets, eskies, and inflatable pools after use
• Learn what to do in an emergency

Check out this video for easy ideas of how to work water safety into every day learning. You can teach your children this fun song with actions to remind them how to be safe around water.

This highlights the need for year round swimming lessons. Don't wait for summer. Strong swimmers are safer swimmers. Swimming lessons save lives.

Royal Life Saving Australia is urging everyone to take care around water this Easter long weekend, following a devastating summer that recorded 81 drowning deaths nationwide.

Older Australians at Highest Risk on Record:

A new Report Reveals 55% Spike in Drowning Deaths
Older Australians now account for 26% of all drowning deaths, despite representing just 16% of the national population.
Dramatic new research released today by Royal Life Saving Australia reveals a very concerning rise in drowning deaths among Australians aged 65 years and over.

Risk Changes Across Age Groups

The report highlights distinct patterns across older age groups:

65-74 years: Most active cohort; travelling further to beaches and waterways; swimming and boating common prior to drowning.

75-84 years: Similar recreational profile, though unintentional falls increase.

85+ years: Incidents more likely to occur at home or on residential property; unintentional falls are the leading precursor to drowning.
Of those with a recorded medical condition, 31% had a condition that directly contributed to their death.

The full report can be found here.

A little bit of swimming history I am posting to teach those who dont know about this iconic AUSSIE.

In this race DAWN FRASER wins her THIRD consecutive 100m Freestyle Olympic Gold. 1956; 1960 and here, 1964. The first woman to achieve this feat. Arguably she would have won a fourth in Mexico if it weren't for her ban by officials just after this race, for her involvement in the misreported and controversial 'stealing of the flag' incident from the Emperors Palace. She did NOT steal the flag though she did break curfew with the person who did. She time trialled in Mexico at altitude days before in 1968 , faster than the winner.

What this video doesn't say is that the car accident that caused her spinal injury shortly before this race, also fatally killed her mother, a testament to her resilience.

She was also the first female to break the 'magic' 60 second barrier.

She was named female Swimmer of the Century for this win.

I was proud to be in a relay with her at the First FINA World Masters Championships in Tokyo in 1986 in both the 4x50m Freestyle and 4x50m Medley both winning gold and in World Record Times.

While the time is slow in comparison with current swimmers she did not have the advantage of fast suits; swim caps; flip turns; modern dives; antiwave lane ropes; fast pools or up to the minute training knowledge and sports science to back her up. She was not able to earn any income from swimming, as competitive swimming was highly anchored in the idealism of 'amateurism'. While the average age of female swimmers in that era was 16-18 and who mainly lived at home, Dawn was considered an anomaly at 27 forced to work to support herself in jobs that allowed her time to train. This in an era when women couldn't open a bank account and were not allowed to work once married.

She is considered a living legend in Australia and has been an integral part of our Olympic team for decades being on pool deck with the team to inspire, motivate and encourage.

I salute you Dawn!

I have some availability next week (12th Jan) at 9am on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday for a 1:1 private lesson (45 minutes) or small group, for any swimmers struggling with an aspect of either swim skills and/or learning to dive.

It is at Lauriston Girls' School, Armadale.

If you, or anyone you know, is fearful of diving, or always lose their goggles; lands heavily or wants to fine tune their entry and breakout; or just want to get some practice in (many pools don't allow diving so many swimmers don't get much practice opportunity) this could be for them. Blocks with kickers to practice on.

Alternatively, anyone wanting to learn a flip turn, touch turn, backstroke start or finish, underwater pullout or any other skill, I would be pleased to assist.

Please spread the word and target specific swimmers who might benefit.

They can email me direct at
