Happy International Pilates Day!

I found Pilates 18 years ago and haven't looked back. Today I want to take a moment to thank all the incredible mentors, collegues, clients students and friends I have met along the way - I adore each and everyone of you! I'm so grateful for the impact you have all had on my Pilates journey so far. This career has given me so many opportunities to help others, build community, learn, grow and share my passion for Pilates with everyone I can! I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the work I do and I'm excited to see where this journey takes me next!

#13 Roll Over

It’s been a few months now since I have been able to do this one. It felt good until about 20 weeks pregnant when it started to feel a little uncomfortable. I’m looking forward to getting back to doing this!

Only 4 weeks to go and of course some recovery time but I’m hopeful I’ll be back to doing roll overs again very soon 🤞🏻

My Christmas Wish For You...
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
"My Christmas wish for you, my friend
Is not a simple one
For I wish you hope and joy and peace
Days filled with warmth and sun
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I wish you love and friendship too
Throughout the coming year
Lots of laughter and happiness
To fill your world with cheer
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
May you count your blessings, one by one
And when totaled by the lot
May you find all you've been given
To be more than what you sought
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
May your journeys be short, your burdens light
May your spirit never grow old
May all your clouds have silver linings
And your rainbows pots of gold
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I wish this all and so much more
May all your dreams come true
May you have a Merry Christmas friend
And a happy New Year, too..."

Imprint or Neutral?
For as long as I have been teaching this has been one of the most controversial Pilates topics!!!

Is there a right way or a wrong way?
Is there safe way or unsafe way?
These questions constantly come up.

What do you think? I would really love to hear your thoughts 💭

Here's my thoughts:
There is no right or wrong way. One is not "safer" or "better" than the other and both are functional for our bodies for different reasons. The question really should be why would I choose/use one over the other? We should be working with our clients to achieve the best possible outcome for their needs. No two bodies are the same so there is no one size fits all.

Variation is one of the best things we can do to prevent injury and restore full body function - so why not do BOTH!!!

Be open to exploring both positions, change it up, work towards fearless, pain free, functional movement 👊🏻

#8 Straight One Leg Stretch

If your in the Pilates community you have probably heard the following terms a lot! “Contrology” Pilates “Classical” Pilates and “Contemporary” Pilates... it can be confusing!! What do they all mean? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Well “Contrology” refers to the very first sequence of exercises created by Joseph Pilates himself. “Classical” is the same sequence but there has been additional influence to the repertoire from the “elders” such as Romana (Joseph’s first protege). “Contemporary” Pilates is all the variations including progressions and regressions on the “Contrology” and “Classical” sequences we see in Pilates classes today. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
These 3 exercises where not part of Joseph’s “Contrology” sequence:
Straight One Leg Stretch (aka Scissors)
Straight Double Leg Stretch (aka Lower and Lift) and
Criss Cross!! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We can thank Romana and his other protégés for this killer Ab burn 🔥 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

#7 Doubls leg stretch

Yesterday I had the conversation with my students about the need for more inclusivity and community in the pilates industry. This morning when I woke up I read the most perfect post from my fellow .education super star 🌟 .pilates owner of Melbourne.
Cat articulated this perfectly!! 💛

・・・
A while ago, a guy named Joseph Pilates made up some exercises that he taught in a specific order and called it Contrology.
He also designed a machine to do them on called the Universal Reformer. The ones we have are different but the general design is the same.
Sometimes we teach the exercises he taught, sometimes we teach other things, sometimes we just make stuff up.
Joe believed that physical fitness was the first requisite to happiness. We believe social connection is up there too. So we strive to combine these ideas and build a Pilates community focused on inclusivity, consciousness and having a good time.
・・・ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This seemed fitting this morning given the variation of Double Leg Stretch I'm doing above is a "variation" and not the original version from the original Contrology order.

#5 Rolling like a ball (Rolling Back) ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Nothing like a little morning roll to iron out those overnight kinks and energise the body!! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
So simple and so underrated.
This little move is perfect as transition between exercises or as preparation for more advanced exercises coming up in the original sequence 👍🏻

#3 The Roll Over ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Over the years I have found that aside from genuine injuries or contraindications the main reason people struggle with the Roll Over is FEAR! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
As adults when was the last time you turned your body upside down? Your really the wrong audience to ask but in general the answer is decades ago!! Most people don’t believe their body can do it and they are scared to try. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
As instructors it is our job to remove the fear and restore our clients belief in their bodies. We need to hold space for them to explore these movements, safely, with guidance and without pressure. Empowering them to redefine what they are capable of! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Nothing makes me happier than seeing someone’s eyes light up when they achieve a movement they thought was impossible!! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
