Altona Gators Basketball Club The Junior and Senior Championship program "Altona Gators" currently has Junior, Senior and Youth development teams with an opportunity to grow all programs.

Junior Championship teams compete against associations throughout Victoria each Friday night with Altona Gators is the representative basketball club for the Altona Bay Basketball Association, participating in Basketball Victoria State Competitions. Our program is designed to develop local domestic junior and senior players at the elite level. Formed in 1990 the Altona Bay Basketball Association (

ABBA) moved into "The Swamp" at the Altona Sports Centre in 1992. The Association runs both Junior & Senior Domestic Competitions as well as Representative teams playing as the "Altona Gators".

2003 Altona re-entered the Senior Competition then known as VBL with 2 teams Senior Men’s and Women. Over the past five seasons the Gators have experienced considerable growth and success in both the Senior and Junior programs. In the past 6 Season our Senior Men have competed in 5 Finals series and a number of Junior Girls and Boys teams have won VJBL Championships. The Altona Sports Centre completed the building of 2 additional courts in 2008 taking the stadium to 6 courts, 2 courts with seating for approximately 300 +spectators.

2009 has been one of the Gators most successful years with 12 out of 23 teams making it to the final series, including the Men’s Youth League team in their inaugural year. Of these, 7 teams (6 Junior and 1 Senior team) made it to the Grand Finals, with 3 of the junior teams taking out the championships‐ the 14.3 Girls, 14.1 Boys and the U20 Boys and the Division 3 Women took out the premiership flag, the first time ever since joining the Big V competition. Building on the success of 2009 the Gators will field 23 teams in the 2010 season, including a new Women’s Youth League Team. Gators will now field four senior teams, including the promotion of the Division Three Women to Division One.

Both teams are known for their tough defence, strong work ethic and relentless effort, setting the stage for what promises to be a fantastic battle. Every possession will matter in this important clash as our young women look for an important win.

Another big weekend of basketball awaits at the Altona Sports Centre, with two important home games for our Big V programs.

Saturday night sees our VYCW take on McKinnon in a crucial matchup. The girls have been working hard and would love the support of the Gators family as they look to secure an important home-court victory.

Then on Sunday afternoon, our Senior Women host Mildura in what promises to be a fantastic contest. The Women have been in strong form and will be looking to continue their winning ways against a tough and competitive Mildura side.

We need the Gators family behind both teams. Bring the energy, wear your green, and help create a great atmosphere at the Swamp as our girls and women defend home court.

Introducing the Altona Gators Performance Pathways Showcase!

This school holidays, all current Gators representative players are invited to take part in a club-wide development session led by Director of Coaching Randy Shanklin.

The Showcase will focus on skill development, game concepts, scrimmages and player assessment, while providing an exciting opportunity to bring our entire representative program together as we prepare for the second half of the season.

Girls Only sessions are back for Term 3 at Aussie Hoops!

Looking for the perfect introduction to basketball? Aussie Hoops provides a fun, engaging environment where children can learn the fundamentals of the game with experienced coaches and players.

We are also excited to offer a Girls Only Aussie Hoops session, providing a welcoming and supportive environment for girls to learn and enjoy basketball. This session will be led by experienced female coaches, creating positive role models and helping girls build confidence, skills and friendships through sport.

High Performance Rep Prep

This school holidays, we are running a camp exclusively for current domestic players to prepare for try outs in October. While we usually run this camp in September, this year, we are providing an opportunity for current domestic players to be ahead of the game and start their preparation early.

The camp also provides an opportunity for non rep players to become accustomed to Gator’s drills and style of play in an inclusive learning environment. Facilitated by Director of Coaching Randy Shanklin and other representatives coaches, the camp provides an opportunity for you to learn and have fun.

We are looking for dedicated coaches to coach within our VJBL program.

We are looking for passionate coaches who are committed to growing their knowledge of the game and understand the importance of good sportsmanship and long term development.

We provide ongoing support from our Director of Coaching and age group coaches including ongoing coach development and the opportunity to undertake further coach accreditation.

Coaches are required to be 16 years or older, hold a working with children check, willing to attend two training sessions and a game per week and coach development sessions.

A huge thank you to TEAM 639 | STRENGTH & CONDITIONING FACILITY for welcoming our U16.1 and U18.1 girls into the gym this week!

The girls had an awesome session focused on moving their bodies off the court, building strength, and developing habits that will help them perform at their best. It was a fantastic opportunity to learn, challenge themselves, and continue their development as athletes.

The Altona Gators High-Performance Camps are back for the Winter School Holidays!

Our Elite Stream camps are designed exclusively for Representative Players, providing greater competitive and development opportunities for all athletes. These elite, professionally led sessions are designed to help players build trust, self-esteem, and a competitive edge. While each camp provides valuable individual benefits, athletes who attend all sessions will experience the greatest growth — particularly in skill development, basketball IQ, and perseverance.

The camps are strategically layered to progressively develop technical skills, strategic thinking, and problem-solving abilities, while also helping players prepare for the upcoming Showcase through similar concepts and training principles.

Designed and facilitated by Randy Shanklin — Director of Coaching and Basketball Victoria High Performance Coach — and assisted by an array of Gators coaches, these camps provide an invaluable opportunity for players to elevate their game.
