Altona Gators Basketball Club The Junior and Senior Championship program "Altona Gators" currently has Junior, Senior and Youth development teams with an opportunity to grow all programs.

Altona Gators is the representative basketball club for the Altona Bay Basketball Association, participating in Basketball Victoria State Competitions. Our program is designed to develop local domestic junior and senior players at the elite level. Formed in 1990 the Altona Bay Basketball Association (ABBA) moved into "The Swamp" at the Altona Sports Centre in 1992. The Association runs both Junior & Senior Domestic Competitions as well as Representative teams playing as the "Altona Gators".

2003 Altona re-entered the Senior Competition then known as VBL with 2 teams Senior Men’s and Women. Over the past five seasons the Gators have experienced considerable growth and success in both the Senior and Junior programs. In the past 6 Season our Senior Men have competed in 5 Finals series and a number of Junior Girls and Boys teams have won VJBL Championships. The Altona Sports Centre completed the building of 2 additional courts in 2008 taking the stadium to 6 courts, 2 courts with seating for approximately 300 +spectators.

2009 has been one of the Gators most successful years with 12 out of 23 teams making it to the final series, including the Men’s Youth League team in their inaugural year. Of these, 7 teams (6 Junior and 1 Senior team) made it to the Grand Finals, with 3 of the junior teams taking out the championships‐ the 14.3 Girls, 14.1 Boys and the U20 Boys and the Division 3 Women took out the premiership flag, the first time ever since joining the Big V competition. Building on the success of 2009 the Gators will field 23 teams in the 2010 season, including a new Women’s Youth League Team. Gators will now field four senior teams, including the promotion of the Division Three Women to Division One.

CHARLOTTE IS COLLEGE BOUND!

Congratulations to our very own Charlotte Dunn, who has committed to William Woods University to continue her basketball journey!

Charlotte has worked incredibly hard to develop her game, combining outstanding athleticism with an exceptional work rate. This exciting opportunity is a well-earned reward for her dedication and determination.

Above all, Charlotte is a wonderful person and teammate. Whether she is coaching our juniors, helping around the club or lending a hand wherever needed, she consistently gives back to the Gators community.

Our 2026 Gator Girl Award recipient, Charlotte represents everything we value at Gators. Her next chapter is another proud example of the opportunities available to female athletes through our Gators pathway, inspiring younger players to pursue their own goals.

Congratulations also to Charlotte’s family, whose support has helped her reach this milestone.

We are so proud of you, Charlotte, and cannot wait to cheer you on at William Woods University but first hope to see her on court with our VYCW in 2027.

Well done Charlotte!

Gators, let’s unplug for a cause that matters.

On 24 October, we’re encouraging our Altona Gators community to take part in Unplug24 — stepping away from social media for 24 hours to raise awareness and funds to help prevent s*x extortion and su***de.

The challenge honours Mac Holdsworth, who died by su***de on 24 October 2023, aged just 17, after experiencing s*xual extortion.

Established in Mac’s memory, SmackTalk provides free educational presentations that encourage better conversations, build awareness and help people support one another.

As a club, we care about our community’s wellbeing on and off the court. This is an opportunity to put down our phones, connect with those around us and make time for meaningful conversations.

Join the challenge on 24 October:

• Sign up for Unplug24.
• Encourage family, friends and teammates to join you.
• Raise funds or donate to support SmackTalk’s free educational programs.

You can donate at:

Let’s get behind this important cause, Gators. One conversation can make a difference.

2027 COACHING ANNOUNCEMENT | STATE CHAMPIONSHIP WOMEN

Randy Shanklin returns to lead our Senior Women in his 20th season at the helm as a Senior Coach. As the league goes into an exciting new era in the 2027.

Our Senior Women enjoyed an outstanding 2026 campaign, going undefeated throughout the pre-season and recording wins against every Division One opponent except eventual unbeaten champions, Melbourne University. Their only four losses came against the champions, including a narrow Grand Final defeat.

While the Grand Final result was heartbreaking, the team’s achievements earned promotion to State Championship Women—the highest division in the VBL.

With a team built largely on homegrown Gators talent, this is a proud milestone for our club and the junior pathway that helped shape these players.

Our women have earned their place among the state’s best. We cannot wait to see them take on the challenge in 2027 and their is no better leader than Randy to ensure our women have sustained success.
