Alice Springs Masters Games

Alice Springs Masters Games The Alice Springs Masters Games known as 'The Friendly Games' is back 10-17 October 2026! Registrations are open! Follow us for updates.

In the early 1980s the Australian Sports Commission first suggested an idea of a Masters Games and the philosophy of Masters’ sport. The development of Masters’ sport included an underlying belief that each participant is a champion in his or her own right, as long as the physical and mental attributes for each stage of life have been maintained at their optimum levels. The Northern Territory Gove

rnment immediately embraced the idea, seeing potential opportunities for economic and social development benefits. In 1986 the first Masters Games event in Australia was held at Alice Springs. The 1986 Alice Springs Masters Games (then called the Central Australian Masters Games) became the second event of its kind to be staged anywhere in the world. The only previous multi-sport Masters Games was the 1985 World Masters in Canada. The Alice Springs Masters Games concept was highly successful and quickly earned the reputation of ‘The Friendly Games’ because of the camaraderie and good spirited nature of the competitors. That spirit is now carried around Australia and overseas by the thousands of people who have experienced the event. The 2023 Alice Springs Master Games will be back 14-21 October!

Meet Nick from the Central Australia Rough Riders 🚴‍♂️

As the Mountain Biking Sport Coordinator for the Alice Springs Masters Games, Nick is helping bring the action to life this year. We caught up with her for a quick round of questions so you can get to know her a little better:

🤔 What is the toughest Ride in Alice:
Hell Line lives up to its name. It may not be the most technically difficult trail, but it always feels like an epic experience. Pack plenty of water and some lolly snakes!

🤔 What is your favourite Trail:
It's got to be the Bus track. Big climb up to an epic view, followed by some of the wildest rock features I've ridden. I've ridden it 100 times and still pause and smile at the bottom.

🤔 Do you prefer XC, Trail or Downhill:
I do live for the descents but honestly enjoy them more if I earnt them by doing a big climb.

🤔 How old do you have to be to participate in ASMG26:
Not old at all! 30 years old is the youngest but don't underestimate the old guys!

🤔 What Trail or Track Provides the Best View in Alice:
Top of Bus is epic, but my favourite has to be the ridgeline on Inarlenge, just above the Kurrajong Trail Head. It's so accessible and close to town you can go up there after a tough day at work and feel your whole day get better.

Not everyone gets the chance to see a dingo this close, but our Ambassador Nathan Buckley was lucky enough to meet Tjilpi and Min Min, Alice Springs Desert Park's resident dingoes 🐾

While up-close encounters aren't an experience offered (just yet 😉), you can still learn all about these iconic Aussie canines during the daily dingo talks from 9.45am.
