Thank you to all who attended an epic 50th Anniversary Tatts Finke Desert Race. We have been asked questions about fuel availability so here is an update.

Phillip 'Budgie' Preece is the Finke Hero recipient for 2026.

A steadfast and selfless volunteer, Phillip has been part of the event since 2006, dedicating nearly two decades of unwavering service to the Finke Desert Race.

Initially stepping into the volunteer ranks as a Start Grid Marshal on the start line in 2006, Phillip has consistently and reliably returned to every edition of the race since.

Over time taking on more responsibility as a Team Leader, today Phillip is known for his instrumental role in starting every competitor as they launch into the desert for the Prologue and Race Day 1.

Known to others as a calm, steady figure, ensuring everything runs smoothly and safely on the start line, Philip is seen by all teams, often supporting the broader Finke community through his assistance in the Merchandise area — constructing shelving and completing various practical jobs to support operations.
