Last night, Sunshine United Cricket Club was incredibly proud to accept the Brimbank City Council Award in the Sports and Wellbeing category for our Girls Cricket Program.
This recognition is a reflection of the enormous effort, passion and commitment that so many people have poured into building our junior program over a number of years. What began around six years ago with a strong focus on junior development and our Woolworths Blast program, led by Luke Magnabosco and Brad Rego has grown from just a handful of participants into a thriving and vibrant program with strong numbers across both girls’ and boys’ cricket.
This achievement would not have been possible without the dedication of our volunteers, led by the tireless work of Terry Nicholls. The time, energy and care shown in local schools, within the community and around the club has played a huge role in creating opportunities for young people to enjoy cricket in a welcoming and supportive environment. The impact of that work goes far beyond cricket itself — it is about confidence, friendships, teamwork and creating lifelong memories.
A special thank you also to David Connolly for his outstanding leadership as girls coach during the program’s formative years. His organisation, planning and commitment have been instrumental in helping the program grow and succeed.
Most importantly, Sunshine United Cricket Club would like to sincerely thank all of the parents and families involved in helping bring our entire junior program to life. From volunteering, scoring, transporting kids, supporting events and cheering from the sidelines, your contribution is the backbone of our club. Thank you for trusting us with your children and for helping create such a positive, inclusive and community-focused environment.
Seeing the enjoyment, friendships and development of all our junior players is the greatest reward of all, and we are excited about what the future holds for our growing junior program. Cricket clubs run on volunteers, caffeine and someone yelling “whose turn is it for orange slices?” — and we are lucky to have plenty of great people doing all three.
Finally, thank you to Simon Davis and Leoni Davis for nominating Sunshine United Cricket Club for this award and for your ongoing support of our club and community.
