Look out! Turtles about! 🐢

School holidays have started, which means more cars and people on our beaches! It also means our turtle friends are currently nesting at Bribie Island and we're expecting baby turtles in the New Year, YAY! 😍

With that in mind, we ask everyone to take extra care when visiting our beaches these holidays, to prevent disturbing them and their nests.

Here are some ways you can help:

🐢 Keep off sand dunes and only use beach umbrellas well below the dunes
🐢 Do not drive 4x4’s above the high tide mark.
🐢 Do not interfere with turtle nests
🐢 Dispose of plastics and unwanted fishing gear responsibly
🐢 Follow directions in 'go slow' areas and look out for turtles when boating
🐢 If you live or are staying next to the beach, switch off unnecessary lights and close curtains and blinds from 7:30pm, to reduce light pollution and prevent turtles becoming disoriented

📸 Shout out to Bribie Island Turtle Trackers for the photo.

LEARNING TO SWIM IN OPEN WATER

This little lad has learned to swim in saltwater pools. He can confidently travel across the pool, propel off walls and the bottom, roll to float and travel in a back float to seek safety.

Today he had his first open water experience and what a great time he had.. learning just how different open water swimming is!!

Today we visited a freshwater creek. He enjoyed learning about currents, bouyancy, potential hazards, changing depths and surfaces and was surprised to learn that floating (his favourite survival skill) is not quite as easy in freshwater!! He also learned that his favourite stroke (freestyle) was not the best stroke to use in this water!

Learning about water safety is an important and fun part of learning to swim! Do you know that 294 people died in Australian waterways last year? Open water is entirely different to a swimming pool, and your child is very likely to encounter open water during childhood. Dams, creeks, rivers, lakes, floods and our amazing beaches are such an accessible part of the Aussie lifestyle.

So many parents are confident thinking their children have learned to swim in a pool, but do they have basic water safety skills in open water? Consider an Open Water Swimming Class!
