Making your training environment a positive one is not just your coaches responsibility here is some things you can do to help!

1. Say hello to everyone! (Saying hello first makes you the winner šŸ˜‰ make kindness your first competition)

2. Learn everyone’s name in your class. Introduce yourself as many times as you need too. It can be difficult but worth it. The relationships you build in the training room are valuable.

3. Share compliments and look for the good in people.

4. Smile often. And help bring some joy to the room.

5. Use your manners and be grateful your body works and people are willing to help you get better. Please and thank-you goes a long way.

6. Be thoughtful of others. The more you help and give good energy the more of that will be returned.

7. Encourage consistency and check in with your friends.

8. Respect peoples boundaries and personal lives. It’s not the place for casual hook ups, affairs or any other drama.

9. Ensure you help guide those with less experience than you and make sure you are rƓle modelling how to be a good student.

10. Have fun! Enjoy a laugh and a joke.

What do you love most about your favourite training partners?

Striking open mats on Saturdays end with a mat chat. Sometimes with the coaches providing feedback and updates on upcoming shows, sometimes going around the room to see if everyone can identify wins from their rounds and areas to focus on during classes the following week.

Such a valuable way to end the week!

It may be just a belt…..but who you become on the way to getting it is important.

It may be just a belt… but the team values that you embody to receive it are important.

It may be just a belt….but the relationships you foster along the way are important.

It may be just a belt….but the movement required along the way is important to your health.

It may be just a belt…but the example you have shown to your community is important.

It’s just a belt but the physical, mental and spiritual journey it represents for each team, tribe, community is important. The values that team, tribe and community allow and reject are important.

The world needs these communities. And If we want the world to be a better place it’s up to us to continually improve the communities we are part of also. Just like our Jiu Jitsu the work is never done.

It may be just a belt but you, your team and your art get to decide its value…, not anyone else.

It could be said we are raising a generation of entitled or soft kids. I don’t really fully agree. I’ve met plenty of great kids with super supportive parents. And at Courage Training Centre we have a whole tribe of them.

That being said Children are being conditioned to shun commitment and responsibility and evade accountability almost routinely. I feel mostly we let our kids give up too early and choose too much of what to do with their extra curricular time.

It’s not really a surprise that with so many unfit, unhealthy and uninspired adults that our children at times suffer the same misfortunes.

I am asked regularly how we get our kids to wash the dishes, do the laundry, help with groceries and attend training.

The answer is that we don't "get our kids" or force our kids to do anything.

There is no threat of penalty or reward.

Because in our family, there are expectations. We don’t have fussy eaters or people who don’t pitch in. We all do our part.

Not only what we tell our kids is expected of THEM. But what they see us expect of OURSELVES.

Children will some what do what you ask.

But they WATCH it all.

So if you have a child who talks back.

Refuses to pitch in without a fight.

Or claims the 'unfair' card on a regular basis.

My strong advice is simple...
..Look in the mirror.

Striving for excellence daily is contagious.

Being consistent and committed is infectious.

Not accepting negativity or a victim mentality, a complete choice.

Kids become what they see. Some of the good bits and some of the bad bits aswell. I see a lot of my good qualities in my children. But I can also see some of my flaws.

I have chosen martial arts as a vehicle in my family to pass on lessons about discipline, commitment, health, resilience and courage.

What have you chosen?
