Ten days before Christmas. The 8th hole. And a buggy with a mind of its own.

Peter Parks was getting out of the bunker on the eighth when he reached for the buggy handle to steady himself, and accidentally hit the throttle.

The buggy took off.

Peter admits he wasn't quite as fast as he used to be, and couldn't quite catch it.

It turned right and headed straight for the dam.

Phone, car keys, everything, ten days before Christmas.

Over the edge it went, and disappeared from sight.

Peter walked up expecting the worst. The lot, in the reservoir.

Then his mate came over and said no: the rope had caught it. The buggy was hanging there, just short of the water, like it had simply decided to stop.

Peter reckons that was pretty lucky.

When members see rain, they usually think: “Will the course be open?”

When Barry and the course team see rain, they think: “Right… what has the mountain done this time?”

This winter has been a proper test. Mount Osmond normally gets around 710mm of rain for the year, and we’re already sitting at about 650mm with a few months still to go.

That means soft ground, machinery restrictions, washed-out bunkers… and, occasionally, a Gator sliding down a slope and ending up wedged against a tree.

Just a normal Monday, really.

After 70mm over the weekend, the team repaired the bunker washouts. Then another 20mm arrived, and they were straight back out doing it all again.

It’s the part of the course most people don’t always see: the early starts, the mud, the repeated repairs, and the constant battle to keep Mount Osmond playable when the mountain decides to fight back.

A big shoutout to Barry and the grounds team for the work that happens long before most of us arrive with clubs in the boot.

Throwback Thursday: before comment sections, Mount Osmond had Colonel Miles Beevor and a typewriter.

Colonel Miles Beevor was a chartered accountant, Honorary Secretary of the Mount Osmond Country Club from 1930 to 1934, and by all accounts, a very recognisable figure around the Club: monocle, distinctive meerschaum pipe and all.

He also appears to have had one more talent: gently roasting the membership in verse.

His poem, “Impressions”, later included in the Club’s Jubilee book Fairways on the Mount, is exactly the kind of Club history we love: affectionate, cheeky, slightly ruthless, and very clearly written by someone who knew every character on the course.

Nearly a century later, it still feels familiar. Different names, different outfits, fewer pipes perhaps… but the same great tradition of golfers giving each other absolutely no peace.

Every club has its traditions. Some are worth keeping. Others are worth changing.

Former president Jack Bailey reflects on something that made Mount Osmond quietly stand apart from many other clubs of its time.

While women at many clubs were still treated as associates, with limited rights and even separate entrances, Mount Osmond had a different approach.

Women played Saturday golf, were recognised as full members, and became an integral part of club life long before it became the norm elsewhere.

It's a part of the club's history that Jack believes is well worth remembering.

Throwback Thursday: Mrs H. Davis, setting the standard since the 1930s.

Almost 100 years ago, Mrs H. Davis stood over the ball at Mount Osmond looking less like someone “having a social hit” and more like someone about to give the course a very firm talking-to.

The hat.
The stance.
The follow-through.
The expression that says: yes, I saw exactly where that went.

Mrs Davis was Captain of the Mount Osmond Women Members from 1930 to 1933 — which means she was leading the way at the Club in an era when golf fashion had more layers, clubs had less forgiveness, and a good round still depended on the same old things: timing, nerve, and not letting the hill win.

Not every first impression is graceful...

Penny's very first visit to Mount Osmond involved walking the course with her husband, spotting a golf ball on the slope... and promptly sliding all the way down the muddy hillside.

She still remembers ending up completely covered in mud.

Thankfully, it didn't put her off.
