This is one of my all time favourite quad killers. Like many of you I am glute dominant and the "heel elevated step down" allows you to minimise glute and hamstring engagement. In addition, this end range of motion exercise particularly hits Vastus Medialis(VMO - the tear drop muscles on the inside of your thigh).
I started doing this about a year ago and have since then my troublesome patella(knee cap) arthritis hasn't given me any grief unless I get a little lazy and neglect this exercise.
It's an awesome replacement for leg extensions and can be done with body weight to begin with.
