For our non-Australian followers, we also call them 'bin chickens'. (Sorry, Ibis Cycles, you know we love you. ) πŸ—‘οΈπŸ”

THE RING OF DEATH. Did you know we can repair many of these in-house? πŸ₯³

This carbon fork steerer has got a nice little groove worn into it due to the headset being run loose for an extended period. Wear like this makes it impossible to maintain the correct bearing preload for the headset, and it's often considered to be a safety issue, especially if the wear is excessive. Many bike shops will tell you that you need new forks, and sometimes a complete frameset (depending on bike/fork's age). But hold that thought. πŸ›‘

We've been repairing carbon fork steerers for years, using a technique that we developed in the workshop. (See pic 2.) For the fraction of the cost of new forksβ€”not to mention a frameβ€”we can properly fix the issue, and you can keep riding.

However! This repair is only possible if the fork wear is caught in time. If too much carbon has been worn away, it definitely becomes a structural/safety issue, and then replacement is the only option. πŸ’ΈπŸ’ΈπŸ’Έ (Yet another reason to get a regular full service done.)

Have you been told your forks are toast because of steerer wear? πŸ’€ Drop us a line. We might be able to save you a lot more than you'd expect.

Send to your heartbroken friend who had to retire their carbon steed for this reason. β€οΈβ€πŸ©Ή

πŸ”οΈ CUSTOM-BUILT FOR THE WILDERNESS πŸ”οΈ

Tom is a man who likes to go bikepacking far, far away. He's done solo international trips, Australian sojourns, and is a multiple Hunt 1000 finisher. (The Hunt = an unsupported Melbourne to Canberra bikepacking event that's been known to break brains and bikes.)

He was looking for a custom build tough enough to survive the wilderness yet comfortable enough for long (sometimes *extremely* long) days in the saddle. Enter the Esker Japhy: born for long rides into wild spaces. 🌲

This bombproof custom build features:
βœ… Shimano XT groupset for performance and reliability
βœ… Ohlins forks for plush front-end suspension
βœ… Passchier bamboo handlebars (yup, you read correctly)
βœ… Ergon GP1 Biokork grips for long-distance comfort
βœ… Redshift Shockstop suspension post for bump absorption
βœ… S***k Hex wheels + Vittoria Mezcal tyres for durability

Tom's been putting the Japhy through its paces, and is happy to report that it's low-maintenance, comfy and tough as nails.

Is the wild calling you? A BMCR custom build can help you answer it πŸ“₯

HORROR FIND: there's a jockey wheel under here somewhere.

Let's just say it was a journey of discovery. Dirty, gritty, messy discovery. 😷

Workshop tip: a bike we can actually see is a bike we can fix faster (and therefore saves you πŸ’°οΈ on your service). We love a good clean before drop-off. 🧼

Be honest: have you ever let your drivetrain get to this point? Let us know in the comments. (You get an exception if you've been riding the Mawson during the wet season. )
