Being a dad is not an easy thing. Was so much change going on in the world we feel like we have to be able to do what’s right for our kids, be able to give them some comfort, reassurance, and sage advice. But what if that’s hard to do? What if just understanding what to do ourselves today is difficult? Well, all we can do is our best. And for most of us doing our best and caring for those young people in our lives is enough. If you genuinely care about your kids, have their best interest at heart, and still make mistakes, you’re still being an awesome person. Take the load off dad. Just relax today, dad. You don’t have to be perfect dad.

Do me a favour today. What a smile on your face, just let all your worries go. Even just for five minutes, 10 minutes, stretch it out to an hour. Life is too short to be worried so much about so many little things. Have some peace today. Take a chill pill.

We must do difficult things. Today I did my first Ocean Surf Ski race - 20km. It was tough. I’ve been battling a bug for the last three weeks with fatigue, low training and spent the last few days contemplating abandoning the race. But it’s not about winning, it’s about challenging yourself, pushing to your limit so you know where it is. While I was out there, offshore I could see a coast guard boat in the distance and in my head it made sense to paddle up to them and quit. That was the sensible thing to do, the easy thing. But life’s not easy, it’s bloody tough, it doesn’t care, so we fight on, dig deep, we endure. Why? Because this is what our ancestors have done for millions of years. For me, this was not life and death, it was optional. We must challenge ourselves, wake up our evolutionary potential. Go on, get out there. I’ve got your back.

That’s it state Ocean championships done and dusted. Surf paddling out there offshore no one around is just awesome. Most of the race I could just see people off in the distance and nothing but beautiful ocean. Bloody tough. But that’s why you do it.

Race day! Qld Ocean Racing Championships. My first ocean race ever. 20km offshore paddle in the surf ski from Caloundra to Mooloolaba. Shocking lead-in to this race. Illness and serious lethargy have destroyed my last 2.5weeks and I was considering abandoning up until 3am. I am ready now though. Bring it on!

Tomorrow morning I undertake my first ocean surf ski race. It happens to be the Queensland championships. Four months ago I hadn’t paddle the surf ski and hadn’t done any paddling for George nearly 30 years prior to that. You can teach an old dog new tricks. And I am looking forward to it.
