Well, today was another great day! The skies were blue, the sun was shining, the air was fresh and there wasn’t a breath of wind. What more could you ask for?

At 9:01am, a little later than our usual 08:31am start, 28 walkers set off from the Kinchina Rocky Gully Trailhead on Maurice Road, Murray Bridge. It wasn’t long before Anthony and his six dogs or was it 7 (?🤔) caught up with us, bringing our procession to 29 humans and six dogs, maybe 7!

We started out on a fairly flat, sandy trail, wandering through beautiful native bushland, then true to it's name Rocky Gully, we found ourselves climbing over rocks! The landscape had changed and great rocky outcrops began appearing around us. Huge weathered boulders, some were even balanced on top of one another, rose from the hillside, their surfaces patterned with shades of grey, rusty orange and brown.

The trail wound its way through the gully, sometimes smooth and sandy underfoot and at other times rocky enough to make us watch where we put our feet. There were a few little climbs to negotiate too. Nothing we couldn’t handle, although I may have spotted the odd “slight incline” in there but trust me they were fine!

Kinchina was absolutely beautiful today. The recent rains have transformed the landscape since we did our reccy walk. Fresh green growth covered the ground and brilliant yellow daisies seemed to be everywhere, and glowing in the sunshine.

There were plenty of little obstacles along the way too, including a fallen tree stretched right across our path. No problem for the BAHWG. Heads down, bend the knees and under we went! It was quite easy for the vertically challenged like myself! Just another day on the trail. 😂

And then things became a little interesting…
Somewhere amongst all those rocks, trees and masses of yellow flowers, we missed a trail. After we’d been walking for about an hour, after some discussion we decided it was time to turn around and retrace our steps.

Now, my theory is that the masses of yellow flowers confused me and made everything look completely different from our reccy walk. Thats why the trail looked so different today and instead of turning left we continued straight.

Anyway thst's my theory and I’m sticking to it! 😂😂

Ming asked me, “Are we lost?”
“Most certainly NOT lost Ming. We’re just creatively rerouted.”
Her reply?
“You always say that!” 😂
Well… she may have a point!

Strangely enough, our accidental turnaround became quite enjoyable. Walking the same trail in reverse gave us a completely different perspective. Things we’d walked straight past earlier suddenly caught our eye, different rock formations, a small tunnel which we didnt see on the reccy walk, little pockets of bushland and views we hadn’t noticed on the way out. Sometimes getting “creatively rerouted” has its advantages! 😂

Kinchina really is a beautiful place to walk, and today it was even more spectacular than when we were here for our reccy. The photos really don’t need much explanation.

☕️ After the walk we headed to Cafe Modra, where Graham and Jude treated us to a fabulous late morning tea. And there was certainly no shortage of carb loading! 😂 We settled around the tables and verandah, Jude made a pot of tea and Jude appeared woth cups of coffee, there were lots of conversations and Graham was kept busy at the barbecue cooking pancakes for us all.

There were scones, cakes, slices, ham and cheese croissants and some mango and yoghurt. Christine spied some chocolate balls so she was very happy!

What a wonderful way to finish the morning off. Good food, lots of chatter and laughter, and enjoying each other’s company. Oh and Lynda and Graham played Jenga which the clever Graham had made.

A huge thank you to Graham and Jude for opening their home to this rather large invasion of hungry walkers and for their wonderful hospitality. ❤️
Another beautiful morning, and another BAHWG adventure. We may not always take exactly the route we intended, but we always find our way back to coffee! 😂

📍 Distance: 6.61–7.2kms, depending on whose Strava you look at! 🙄
🕒 Total Time: just over 2 hours
🏞️ Grade: 2, then Grade 3 & 4 between Gates 6 & 5
⛑️ AED: many thanks to Caroline, much appreciated! 🙏

Let me begin by saying happy fathers day to all the dads. We all hope you have a wonderful day!

We only did this walk about a month ago, but it was definitely worth repeating so our Sunday walkers could experience this beautiful section of Mt George Conservation Park before the warmer weather arrives and our slithery brown friends start popping up! 🐍

After yesterday’s rain and more during the night, I knew things might be a little wet underfoot. And they certainly were! There were puddles, soggy tracks and some wonderfully muddy sections waiting for us along the way. Of course, I had my Merry Boots on, so I was good!☺️

We set off from the Bridgewater Oval, wandered through the playground and made our way up Mills Road, along Carey Gully Road and into Rudd Parade before reaching the Deanery Reserve. Here we stopped for our group photo, although Anthony and his dogs, along with Olivia and Taffy, escaped the camera because Taffy was anxious and Anthony was you guessed it... late!

From the Deanery we headed down the fire track to the Deanery, past the little Fairy Garden and onto the Heysen Trail. With everything still damp from the rain, the bush looked wonderfully fresh and green as we followed the trail and disappeared through the tunnel with us echoing as we cattered and then it was into Mt George Conservation Park.

When the track divided, our dog walkers headed left while the rest of us continued right towards Lewis Fire Track. Unfortunately dogs are not allowed in the section of the park that is through gate 6.

Then we popped through Gate 6 and… hello lots of mud! 😂

A lovely great mud bath stretched across the track. Not a problem for me in my Merry Boots, but for everyone else it was a case of carefully picking a path around it accompanied by plenty of slip, slosh and squelch!

Once we had negotiated that little obstacle, it was pretty much good sailing as we began winding our way upwards towards the Mt George Summit.

And yes, today we can officially say we went mountain climbing! Who cares how high it was? It has Mount in its name, and that’s good enough for us! 💪

The rain had given the whole park a freshly washed look. Leaves glistened, wildflowers dotted the bush with little splashes of colour and the wattles added their brilliant yellow amongst all the green. Looking out across the surrounding hills, the views were softened by a light mist, giving everything that beautiful hazy Adelaide Hills feel.

Reaching the summit was one thing. Coming back down was where the fun really began!

Suddenly the nice easy track gave way to big rocks, exposed tree roots, fallen trees and in places a fairly steep descent. This was definitely the Grade 3 and 4 section of today’s adventure.

There was no looking around admiring the scenery while we were walking here. Eyes down, choose your footing, step carefully… however we chose lots of photo opportunities to made sure we stopped and then looked up to enjoy the view!

We took our time, helped one another where needed and carefully picked our way down through the rocks and roots. Everyone had their wits about them and everyone made it through without a single mishap.

Not far before Gate 5, the landscape changed again and we found ourselves amongst a beautiful stand of tall white gums, some of which I believe were Candlebarks. Then, tucked amongst the trees, was the most gorgeous little lake/dam. Some of our walkers remember swimming here as children/teenagers and state "nope not anymore" as sensible adults! 😂

The water was so still it was like a mirror, perfectly reflecting the trees above it. With the damp bush, misty air and those beautiful reflections, it was one of those lovely little scenes that made us stop for a moment and just take it all in. ❤️

Of course, Mt George wasn’t quite finished with us yet!

Another mud bath had to be negotiated, followed by one final squelchy offering just for good measure as we squeezed our way through Gate 5. 😂

From there we continued through some more soft, squishy mud at the beginning and end of the tunnel, we ducked through and picked up the Heysen Trail again. There were still plenty of puddles to dodge as we made our way along the Heysen Trail, and through another tunnel. Once through the tunnel a short way along we chose the high track today rather than squelching our way through the mud on the lower track behind the Bridgewater Inn.

By now we’d had a little bit of everything but it sure was a terrific walk. ❤️

☕️ Rather than heading straight back to the oval, quite a few of us finished the morning off with coffee at the newly reopened Little Cog, where we were looked after by the amazing Iminy. How she manages to work on her own, move so quickly and remember who ordered what is beyond me! She is incredible.

Another wonderful morning walking through our beautiful Adelaide Hills, with wet boots, muddy legs, plenty of laughs and great company. 🥾❤️

BAHWG CELEBRATES 900 WALKS! 🎉🎊🍷🍾

On this wet and windy Saturday, the BAHWG headed over to 1000 Reasons at Echunga to celebrate a very special milestone, our 900th walk!

And what an awesome place to celebrate such a magnificent achievement for this wonderful walking group!

A big thank you to Vicki B who collated lots of photos into a book for an eternal memory. Everyone loved looking through the photos and remembering lots of special times. I think we will have to write a book now. Any writers out there who would like to give it a go?

We found out today that there are definitely more than 1000 Reasons why you should visit this fabulous little café. The food was terrific, the service was awesome and, despite the wet and windy weather outside, we could not have been more comfortable.

We were seated out on the veranda with the café blinds down and the heaters on, and we were so warm and cosy while the wind and rain did their thing outside. It was perfect!

There was plenty of laughter too! Lynda M, Graham and Leanne B had us in fits whilst we watched them play Jenga. 😂 The concentration and competitiveness was fierce, the very careful manoeuvring and the anticipation as each block was pulled out had everyone watching and waiting for the inevitable crash! And yes it happened! 😂

A huge thank you to Glen and Julie, their awesome chef and all the lovely staff for looking after us so well. Nothing was too much trouble and everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

We were more than happy with our celebration and most certainly will be back. We’ll also be spreading the word about this little Echunga gem!

900 walks! Well now who would have thought when we started this walking group that one day we’d be sitting together celebrating number 900? What a journey it has been, and what a wonderful bunch of people to have shared it with. ❤️

Now there’s only one thing left to say…

Just when we think Spring is making an appearance, Winter decides it hasn't finished yet and lets us know who's currently boss. Back on go the puffer jackets!

Seven walkers and two dogs met at the Upper Sturt tennis courts late this afternoon to complete a walk on a track the group haven't done before, the Melville Track - although we have passed it several times on previous walks. This track was very steep in parts, and also part of the track had been carved up due to recent erosion caused by rain, so the group certainly had to watch their step as they were making their way down. Bronwyn wanted to look for koalas - they are known to frequent this area - but she couldn't risk looking up too much, as the attention needed to be focused on foot placement instead! Which makes walks all the more fun and adventurous!

Once they had reached the bottom of the valley, the group could admire their surroundings a bit more instead of concentrating solely on their feet! As is often the case, there was some happy chattering going on. It really is a beautiful park to explore. A Bunya pine tree formed the back drop for the group photo.

Despite the wintery weather, Spring is making its presence felt, as there are so many trees in blossom, as well as native vegetation in bloom. The last part of the walk included hiking up Melville Track aka Melville's Curse! However this is no challenge for our hardy walkers as they powered on up the 'slight incline'. Other Adele-isms also crept into this afternoon's walk: "take your time" and the ever popular "stay" 🤣🤣 At the end the group met up with Anthony and his entourage of dogs. There is a beautiful mural on one of the buildings at Upper Sturt tennis courts too. In fact, there are a number of lovely murals dotted around the Adelaide Hills; those people lucky enough to live and/or drive around this area might want to look out for them, they really do bring an otherwise drab wall or building to life with their beautiful depictions.

Not a bad way to spend an hour or two in the Hills ❤️

Today is a significant event for the BAHWG - we have reached our 900th walk! This is a fantastic milestone, made possible only due to the amazing work that Adele
does to keep the group running - or more accurately, walking! Many a friendship has been formed, many kilometres have been traversed exploring this wonderful region, and it is all thanks to Adele. We are beyond grateful for all you do for the group Adele.

A sea of pink shirts set off from Candlebark Reserve on Strathalbyn Road, Aldgate, with the group heading down Nation Ridge Road. There are a number of native plants currently in bloom, including the wattle, Australia's national floral emblem, it's bright yellow flower easy to spot. We joined up with the Bandicoot trail, and walked through beautiful scrubland, crossing over creeks as we went. Once we reached Stock Road, the group took the trail that runs alongside the road, passing Warrawong. We were looking out for dingos through the fence!

At the corner of Williams Road, we had our group photo taken with Warrawong in the background. There was a slight (!) deviation from the planned walk; instead we walked down Shanks Road and rejoined the Bandicoot trail through Aldgate Valley reserve alongside the creek. Despite the creek receding considerably, you could still see where the water level had reached, and part of the embankment had also been washed away.

Out onto Aldgate Valley Road but not for long, as the group ducked into Blackwood Lane and then along Dalton Avenue where a tree divides the road. This took us out onto Strathalbyn Road and to our cars at Candlebark Reserve. Thank you everyone for taking part in our 900th walk, it is a group that I am proud to be a part of and I know this sentiment is echoed with lots of others too. Congratulations BAHWG, you are an amazing group of people - and doggos! 🎉

☕️ And of course… the 'must do' post-walk café catch-up was at the Stirling Hotel 😉

🎉BAHWG 900th WALK! 🎉

Wow, tomorrow we will be completing our 900th walk! Way to go BAHWG!! This number doesnt include our reccy walks or bonus walks. I dont include those as they are extra walks. So in actual fact we have walked alot more.

Who would have thought when the Bridgewater Adelaide Hills Walking Group began back in April 8 , 2021 that one day we’d be celebrating this incredible milestone! We have come a long way! Im so proud of this group of walkers' you are the best! ❤️

We have walked all over the beautiful Adelaide Hills and occasionally beyond and have discovered so many places you would never see from a car. Its been interesting and wonderful.

A huge thank you to everyone who has walked with us, whether it’s been once, occasionally or hundreds of times. You are what makes this group so special.

Here’s to Walk #900 and the many more to follow! 💪

We will be celebrating this milestone at 1000 Reasons in Echunga next Saturday. 🍷🎉🥳👏🎊🍾🍻

Well here we are just 1 walk away from our 900th walk! Yahoo!

What another cracker of a morning it was today! Even a jacket wasn’t required. The sun was shining, there were beautiful blue skies above us and the birds were happily chirping away in the trees. It really did feel like spring had arrived early!

We have walked the Old Bullock Trail many times and it remains another firm favourite of ours. It’s not a difficult walk, but there are a couple of "slight inclines" with the final one just before we get back to the cars giving the heart one good final shot of blood whooshing around the heart.☺️

As we made our way along the trail, there was lots to see. We were high enough above the bushland to see some quite remarkable views on both sides of the trail. On one side we could look across the beautiful bushland of Cleland National Park and see down to the Heysen Tunnels on the South Eastern Freeway, then when we looked to the other side there was Mt Lofty with its towers standing high above the surrounding hills, lots more of Cleland National Park spreading itself about and we could even see a few cars winding their way up Greenhill Road.

It’s one of those trails where you find yourself looking from one side to the other and saying "wow how beautiful is all of this", there is always something amazing to see.

We often spot wildlife along this trail, particularly koalas and kangaroos but unfortunately not today, however we did see a couple of bike riders and other walkers enjoying the trail.

As we rounded the bend near the Mt Lofty Golf Course, another stunning view suddenly greated us. In the distance we could clearly see the Adelaide CBD and, beyond that, all the way across to the ocean. The air was so clear today that everything seemed incredibly sharp. We really could see far and wide! And the views just kept getting better.

By the time we reached the top of Mt Osmond, we had one of those wonderful Adelaide Hills panoramas spread out before us. After walking along the trail with native bushland on both sides then suddenly turning a corner and being able to look right across Adelaide and out towards the coast was pretty spectacular. When we reached the top of Mt Osmond we all took a moment and took it all in. It really was special.

Twenty-seven human walkers and 9 doggos joined us for today’s beautiful walk, a fantastic turnout once again.

I will organise another one of our “sunset walks” along here sometime this year. We did one last year and it was very popular. Watching the sun go down and the lights of Adelaide twinkling below us makes this trail feel very magical.

☕️ And keeping with tradition, we of course headed off to a café after our walk for something to drink and nibble. Today we chose one of our favourites, the Organic Market Café in Stirling. There are some traditions one simply does not mess with. Omg...those muffins were to die for!!
