Very soon I’ll be on the sidelines for a little while due to some much needed “renovations “ on an old shoulder injury. The long, slow re-hab grind will begin soon after. Unfortunately I know all too well how this goes. The old war horse is not done yet…

About 80% of my training these days is done on my own. Not that I don’t like training with others, as I’ve always said I’ll train with anyone who walks through the door but the line gets significantly shorter in winter. Everything I do in here is transferable to the outside world, yes “Functional “. As time goes on ( I’ll be 67 in October) my focus these days is on maintaining and building work capacity despite more than a few injuries over the years and some permanent restrictions. ie. How much can I get done in a given time frame? It’s not for everyone and no one trainer or coach has all the answers even though many will try to convince you that their way is the best. I would recommend trying a wide variety of training protocols depending on your objectives. I care little for aesthetics as these are temporary but rather, what someone can actually do, which has a much longer life span. Over the many years I’ve been honing my craft I’ve had the privilege of training with some extremely driven and motivated individuals who were capable of extraordinary performances despite not “looking the part”. This was evident in the few that have gone on to successful careers in the military, in particular special operations. ( Every trainer seems to know a couple of them don’t they?😊) So often people misinterpret big muscular individuals as being capable of all things athletic. Not so in such areas as Selection. Quite often it’s the ones with “the looks” who last the least amount of time and soon V.W. When they are asked to perform at their very best when things are at their very worst they quite often come up short. So many people with good intentions to improve themselves physically and mentally are often discouraged by the endless highlight reels that are everywhere these days. Ignore them, most of them are useless party tricks and do nothing for your well being. Where possible, in person coaching and training is always the preferred option. Where you’re accountable. You turn up when you said you would, you work to standards set by your coach and you always try to do more than what is required. Not the bare minimum. As always, it is never over and the best time to start was 10 minutes ago. Get to it….
