„Uncharted+“ continues to carry the dystopian character of Wang Juyan’s work. As indicated in the title, the book features a series of uncharted landscapes, by their physical existence or by digital collages, from Wang’s project 2084, 2085 and 2086. Somehow,seeing from above, the perspective always seems dwelling with power. „Uncharted+“ is inspired from the ambiguity of power of aerial images, which contains no liner narrative but monumental and metaphorical landscapes.

Born in Beijing, Wang Juyan is an image artist currently based in London. Wang earned his BA in London College of Communication and has exhibited widely between China and Europe, including Foam Museum (Amsterdam), Beaconsfield Gallery (London), Base Milano (Milan), Singapore International Photography Festival (Singapore) etc. and was selected as Foam Talent in 2017. The unique visual language of Wang’s work heightens the ambiguities and the historical sublime in his large-scale landscape.

Our newest monograph on the work of photographer Mark Steinmetz is a collection of photographs that capture the spirit of youth during trips spent away at a summer camp.

„Two projects I focused on were little league baseball [The Players published by Nazraeli Press in 2015] and summer camps. Every year, from spring into summer, one would lead into another and certain things never changed…At summer camp, you have sleeping bags, cabins and camp res. There isn’t much difference between them in 1990 or 1965.

I like that time of age, too. There’s a kind of grave maturity developing at around 11 years old. When a little kid laughs or cries, it doesn’t have real resonance, whereas if someone has these emotions between eight and 12, there’s a poignancy to it.

When they become adults, it’s just not the same. Many of these photos are about the predicament of being a kid put into a certain situation. In one picture, these girls who have been so horrible to each other all summer are now parting – and the depth of their love just gushes out. At the latest since the great success of his book At the Edge of the World (Kehrer 2015), the French photographer Alain Laboile is well known around the world among connoisseurs of black-and-white photography. In his new photobook, Summer of the Fawn, he once again provides insight into the free and nearly fairytale-like life of his family in a small village in the southwest of France. Far away from social constraints, school stress, Facebook & Co., it always seems to be summer here, and his six children frolic barefoot in an enchanted garden, in which one encounters cats, grass snakes, and even a fawn. Nevertheless, rules do indeed exist, even in fairytales – we thus also see how the children are homeschooled: sensibly and lovingly, and often outdoors. Summer of the Fawn is a beautiful, vivacious, and at the same time melancholic ode to childhood and life.

Around a Rome celebrated by classical iconography, the city of great beauty with a monumental and somewhat decadent charm, with its iconic places envied by the whole world, there is another city. Hidden and alien to tourist flows. An area inhabited and lived by more than half of Roman citizens. A chaotic city, often abusive. With its gates, railings, walls, trees, archaeological findings, cars, which overlap and merge in an extraordinary and unique visual chaos. It is the periphery. Indeed, the suburbs. Different from each other but all united by the same visual and architectural anarchy. In this work, which has unfolded for over two years along the perimeter of the city, the author has sought relationships, passages, dialogues, almost as if trying to put the chaos of reality in order.

By presenting a diverse geographic and ethnic selection, this anthology interprets the concept of the photobook in the broadest sense possible. From classic bound books and portfolios, to unpublished works, zines, and scrapbooks, it documents well-known publications, such as Germaine Krull’s ‘Métal’ (1928) and ‘Diane Arbus: An Aperture Monograph’ (1972), and relatively unknown items, like Eslanda Cardozo Goode Robeson’s ‘African Journey’ (1945) and Eiko Yamazawa’s ‘Far and Near’ (1962). Moreover, it addresses glaring gaps and omissions, especially the lack of access, support, and funding for photobooks by non-Western women and women of colour.

Hibi literally comprises a series of street photographs by renowned Japanese photographer Masahisa Fukase. Each of the black and white images painstakingly attend to the road’s surface – the worn road-markings, the fading lines and arrows eroded by the city’s innumerable inhabitants, a web of fissures in the asphalt. In 1992, Fukase printed and painted the works for a solo exhibition, ‚Private Scenes ‘92‘, held at Nikon Salon in Tokyo. He overlaid a set of bromide prints with fluid drawings in brightly coloured inks and on every image the physical presence of the artist is traced, a shadow-presence which seems to offer a reading, an interpretation but one that can never be fully resolved.

Emily Stein’s photographs of blowing on beaches around the world are a portrait of the freedom, innocence and joy of youth. The range of facial expressions as the children blow the gum – frustration, excitement, surprise, concentration – tell a story in themselves.

This is Book 1 in a series that celebrates the best in colourful, modern photography.

Emily Stein started taking photographs in the last term of her Fine Art degree. Never able to concentrate for long enough to finish a painting, she picked up a camera and immediately fell in love with photography. Taking pictures enabled her two great loves: going on adventures and meeting new people. These days she photographs people of all ages, often for commercial clients such as MTV, Vice and Puma, and has a natural gift for capturing their energy and individuality.

In 1949 René Groebli shot a series of images around and on top of trains in France, His working style was stimulated by his experiences with moving images, his fascination with movies. In many experiments he tried to express the dynamism of movement in single photographs. Lasting experiences – like his first train journey from Zurich to Paris – brought him to a city in which he immersed fully in the themes of romanticism and movement in the atmosphere of the French steam trains.

At the end of 1949 RAIL MAGIC was published for the first time, 15 images in a publication that the artist financed himself. It was a daring opus in a time in which photography presented itself quite conservatively and hardly full of dynamism, where honest tradition demanded easily understood documentation. No surprise then, that Groebli’s images were met with rejection. Of course with time passing the work has been met with great admiration by photo historians and today an original publication is a treasured (and pricey) item by book collectors.

With a fresh perception, René Groebli started for this edition from the 15 photographs of the first publication and fashioned this new selection of 74 images, a sort of gem from the beginnings of the “Subjektive Fotografie” as a remembrance of the times when the smell of soot and of smoke intensified the magic between black and white, between Paris and Zurich.
