Seven Years of Pickleball Vienna: Resilience, Consistency, and Growth
On 17 March 2026, Pickleball Vienna celebrated seven years of bringing people together through sport, friendship, and a shared love of an American Sport with the weird name. What began as a small group introducing pickleball to the city has grown into a vibrant and welcoming community in central Wien, open to players of all ages, nationalities and skill levels.
The milestone was marked with a special celebration at the club’s original home—which also served as the site of Austria’s first public pickleball games in 2019. Members and guests came together to celebrate both the anniversary and St. Patrick’s Day, playing late into the night at the former Club Danube Ottakring, on their dedicated pickleball court.
Since its founding, the club has played a key role in establishing pickleball in Wien, transforming curiosity into lasting enthusiasm. Week after week, the courts have been filled with energy, laughter, and the distinctive rhythm of paddle meeting ball—offering a social and engaging way to stay active.
As Austria’s first pickleball open play organization of its kind, the journey has not been without challenges. The COVID-19 lockdowns forced a physical pause during a critical growth period, but the community remained strong. Members stayed connected, supported one another, and kept their passion for the game alive.
When play resumed, the club returned stronger than ever. New players joined, familiar faces came back with renewed energy, and a new chapter began—marked by the move to central Wien’s Tennis Point Vienna in July 2022, official registration as a Verein in 2023, and a “refreshed” leadership team in 2024.
Today, Pickleball Vienna stands as a testament to dedication, inclusivity, and perseverance. Welcoming many guests from near and far, the club continues to create a space where anyone—from competitive athletes to those simply looking to stay active—can feel at home. With offerings of open plays, group workshops, themed events, their notorious Not A Tournament (NAT) events and weekend retreats and field trips, Pickleball Vienna has something for all tastes.
As we celebrate this seven-year milestone, we look ahead with excitement. With a strong foundation and a passionate community, the future of pickleball in Wien is bright.
Seven years in—and we’re just getting started. Time to “get out and play”.
