Let‘s talk Hokas!

Who are they for ?
Who are they not for ?

hokas are rocker shoes, which mean they „rock“ you through the gait cycle.
In order to do that they do not bend at the toebox.

This can be helpful for people with limited big toe mobility.

HOWEVER if your big toe bends just fine and you wear rocker shoes they will not allow you to properly push the ground back with your big toe.

Which then causes an undesirable ripple effect:

When we cannot push the ground with the big toe, we cannot recruit our glutes to extend our hip.

Which then will cause us to overly extend through the lower spine and consequently has us use hipflexors excessively to swing the leg forward.

So what to wear instead?

releases a shoe list several times a year of carefully selected shoes.

A provider can then pick shoes for you off this list and test them objectively on you to find out which shoe works best for YOU.

Lot of new faces here since yesterday, so let me tell you a lil something about me and my work.

My name is Maria and I am based in Vienna,Austria.

I am a movement specialist.
I help people get out of pain and back to living their best life, doing the things they love without worrying about constantly getting injured or being restricted by aches and pains. I do this online as well as locally.

I think the ‘health and fitness’ industry somehow has lost it’s way and for the most part isn’t delivering what most people who hire trainers and movement specialists are looking for:

health and longevity

My mission is to do my part in making this industry better.

I think everyone deserves to truly understand their body and why it acts the way it does.

That is why I place a high emphasis on educating my clients rather than just treating them.

You will find most of my content in my stories as I don’t post very often.

I am an introvert by nature.
I am bad at small talk but love to truly connect to other humans.
I take food so seriously that my friends make fun of me.
I like to spend a lot of time outdoors.
I am obsessed with hamstrings and ribcages.

I feel very lucky to have my friend in town for the next year.

The first supper out in Vienna

It was a pleasure to meet who is based in Vienna for a nice dinner last night.
Maria showed me her favourite part of town 🙏

I met Maria in New York years back, then in Munich recently like myself in a search for better answers when it comes to a frame work for assessing and treating people. We agree there will never be all the answers, just better answer's that guide your treatment but it also brings more questions as part of the process.

It's nice to meet someone who is very passionate and experienced with the PRI framework, the dinner conversation involved some cases studies of course 😂

We have been in touch for a while loosely with this journey and when it comes to training and moving people on we perhaps do things very differently but we have a mutual respect for how each of us do it. The nice part is a friendship has developed through this process 🙏

Looking forward to regular meetings with Maria to sharpen our tool box in how to assess, treat and challenge each others idea's💡

This course is all about making your bodyweight squat the best it can be within 8 weeks of dedicated work.

In order to feel a squat in all the right places, we need to have a good sense of our body in space and direct our centre of mass skillfully.

This is not just crucial for building muscles but also for maintaining movement options as we age.

If the goal is to move well in our 80s and 90s, and live not just a long life but a life of good quality, the squat is an essential movement we should all strive to improve.

Expect each class to begin with a movement prep, followed by smart, progressively loaded strength work.

while the main focus will be the squat, we will not squat for an entire hour (that would be silly).

We will do a great deal of hamstring and ab work as well as some upper body strength work sprinkled in.

You will definitely work it and be challenged, but always prioritizing quality over quantity.

Guess what we did NOT do?
We did not stretch his hamstrings.
Years ago when i had a completely different idea of how the human body works, i would have given him hamstring stretches.
Would he have come down with hamstring stretches eventually ?
Yes, but i would have done him a major disservice by actually breaking the rules of the body. I would have cause way more problems down the road.
To touch our toes we need access to systemic flexion: access to posterior pelvic tilt, access to posterior ribcage expansion. And that is exactly what we did.
I will explain the exact mechanics here further soon.
