Last Saturday Hungary played its first ever international tournament at the AFL Euro Cup in Newcastle. We took an unconventional route to the British isles swinging by sunny Zadar on the way for a few hours of swimming, landing in Newcastle to be greeted by about 5 Greggs in two blocks. Zoli to consume the first of 15 sausage rolls across the weekend. The obligatory team dinner at Spoons the night before the tournament only built our excitement more for the next day.
On the day fueled up by Gregg’s finest sausage rolls for breakfast we were up against strong competition in a group with Ireland, England and Denmark however the team played with grit across the whole day. It’s a massive effort to play 5 matches in a day, and the boys did well to bring our best to it all, culminating with a win against Austria. Overall it was a fantastic day out.
Congratulations to Matyi for scoring Hungary’s first ever goal at an international cup, and to Beni for scoring the winning goal against Austria. A solid effort by Tom for nearly winning Hungary the chocolates in the Longest Kick competition. Congratulations to Zoli for being selected in team of the tournament. Thanks to Zuszi for keeping us in line as team manager.
But above all a massive congratulations to the whole AFL Hungary Team for making this happen, from being formed last year to getting a win in an international tournament is a huge effort. Hajra Magyarok!
