Lechner Racing - the most successful team in the era of the Porsche 997 GT3 Cup car

The history of Lechner Racing started more than 45 years ago when Walter Lechner Sr. drove his first race in 1975. The team, formerly mostly known as Lechner Racing school, quickly established a broad recognition on the international race tracks celebrating successes in various formula classes. ner Sr., a 'late-bloomer' in terms of racing, himself won multiple championships during his two decade lasting professional racing career. In 1987 Walter Lechner crowned himself European Formula Ford Champion, 1982 he won both the Germans and the European title in Formula Super Vau. During the 1980s came his greatest success winning the Sports Car Interseries on several occasions and participating in the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1988 and 1989 in a Porsche 962. Since than, the partnership between Walter Lechner and Porsche blossomed. In 2003, Lechner Racing entered the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup, the supporting race of the Formula 1. Between 2005 and 2020 Lechner Racing won Eight Driver Championships (2005, 2010-2012, 2016-2019) and additionally the Team Championship in 2005, 2007, 2010, 2011, 2014-2020. In total, Lechner Racing achieved 170 Podiums out of 162 races. Furthermore, in 2011 Lechner Racing achieved a great success by claiming Double Pole and Double Podium during the Porsche Carrera World Cup with more than 100 cars participating.

One year ago today.🏁❤️

On August 27, 2025, we celebrated our 50th anniversary at the Salzburgring - the place where the Lechner Racing story started back in 1975.

50 years of motorsport brought together on one start-finish straight: from the legendary Porsche 962 to the presentation of our Porsche 911 GT3 R Rennsport in its special Lechner Racing livery.

On the same day, we also released the trailer for "50 Years Lechner Racing - A Family Story" - the story behind fifty years of passion, success, moments, memories and milestones.

Almost 100,000 views later, the story keeps racing.

We needed to take a deep breath after that race in Zandvoort! Robert de Haan delivered an impressive demonstration of why he was the man of the weekend, almost making the impossible possible together with the BWT Lechner Racing squad after the technical issues in qualifying. He produced a fantastic recovery drive as he looked to keep his championship hopes alive, overtaking seven cars in just a handful of laps and crossing the finish line in third place. However, one of Robert’s overtakes was penalised by the stewards, resulting in a time penalty that relegated the Dutchman to fifth.

Teammate Marcus Amand was in similarly strong form. At times running in formation with his teammate, he worked his way through the field lap by lap and was in a promising top-4 position in the closing stages of the race. However, contact from another car sent the Finn into a spin, and he eventually crossed the line in twelfth. Nevertheless, he still managed to collect some important championship points.

For Caleb Sumich, the seventh race of the 2026 Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup ended prematurely. The Australian made a strong start from 15th on the grid and more than held his own in the midfield battle. His hopes of making further progress through the field were dashed, however, when contact from another car broke his steering. With a top-10 finish – and potentially a maiden podium in the Rookie classification – within reach, the retirement was all the more bitter.

We would like to congratulate Flynt Schuring and CLRT on winning the 2026 Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup drivers’ title.

That was a busy race! We saw Robert de Haan drive like a champion, putting together a commanding performance after starting only eleventh on the grid due to a technical issue in qualifying. In just a handful of laps, the Dutchman had climbed to fifth position, overcoming numerous challenges in what proved to be an eventful race. Every point is valuable in the championship, which made this top-five result all the more vital.

Caleb Sumich started from twelfth and crossed the line in twelfth. Our up-and-coming Australian driver didn’t put a foot wrong and demonstrated great consistency and perseverance in the on-track battles. The rookie also continued his impressive run of form, scoring points in all six races of the 2026 Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup.

Marcus Amand also had the pace to fight for a top result. After a tough qualifying, he had to start the race from eighth position. A strong start gave him a great opportunity to make up places, but a collision in the early stages of the race brought his afternoon to a premature end.

On Sunday, there’s another chance to fight for points and podiums. Lights out for the seventh round of the season is at 11:45.

Free practice was more than just a taste of what promises to be an exciting weekend – it also showed that we are right at the sharp end of the field. Robert de Haan was second-fastest, just 0.011 seconds off the top spot, while Marcus Amand was only a further 0.003 seconds behind in third 🤏 Caleb Sumich also underlined his ambitions this weekend, finishing sixth-fastest in the Rookie classification.

In short, BWT Lechner Racing has started this important race weekend in Zandvoort in strong form, building momentum and improving lap by lap. Now it’s time to analyse 📈 the data and ensure that we make the best start to Saturday morning’s qualifying session at 10:15.

It’s race week! We are ready for the most important race weekend of the year. Two races mean double the points in both the drivers’ and teams’ championships for BWT Lechner Racing ✌️ If that wasn’t enough motivation, Robert de Haan will have the chance to race in front of a home crowd in Zandvoort 🇳🇱 Marcus Amand and Caleb Sumich are also fired up to extract every last point from this exciting two-race weekend 🔥

What a day and victory! 🙌
Congrats to Marcus Amand on winning his first Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup race ever. With pole position, fastest lap and the win, he was the high flyer of the entire weekend.
Huge respect also to Robert de Haan, who fought his way from P9 to P5, bringing home valuable championship points for himself and the team.
Another successful weekend for the whole squad at Hungaroring and the perfect way to head into the summer break. ☀️

Only a few days after Spa, BWT Lechner Racing is straight back in action at the Hungaroring.

After back-to-back podium finishes, de Haan is looking to make it three straight in Budapest.

Overtaking is notoriously difficult at the Hungaroring, making track position everything.

The circuit holds a special place in BWT Lechner Racing's history, with a long list of past wins.
