Mahatalanjona i Everest, saingy mitaky zavatra goavana izy. Mialohan’ny nanombohanay ny fiakarana farany tamin’ity taona ity, dia nahare izahay fa olona 5 no efa namoy ny ainy tao anatin’ny 10 andro monja (ny 4 tamin’izy ireo dia maty nandritra ny dingana voalohany ho any amin’ny Camp 1). Nahita mpihanika naratra mafy ihany koa izahay vokatry ny fianjerana ranomandry lehibe, ka voatery niverina nidina haingana noho ny voina.
Saingy nandritra ny “Summit Push”, teo amin’ilay làlana malaza ratsy antsoina hoe Hillary Step, no tena tsapanay ny hirifirin’ny hatsiaka eo amin’ny “Zone de la mort”. Faty roa no hitanay teny.
Ny iray mbola tsy ampy 24 ora akory no nahafaty azy. Araka ny notantaraina anay dia olona tena tia mihanika tendrombohitra izy io, saingy jamban’ny “fièvre du sommet” hany ka tsy nahita intsony ny loza nananontanona azy. Na dia efa nampitandrina aza ny ekipa niaraka taminy mba hiverin-dalana, dia mbola nanohy ny diany ihany izy. Tonga teny amin’ny tendrony izy, saingy fotoana fohy taorian’izay dia tsy nanana hery intsony ka dia namoy ny ainy.
Ilay iray hafa dia hita fa efa an-taonany maro no teo. Nivaingana tanteraka ny vatany : ny tarehiny, ny volony, ny sofiny … fa tsy nisy simba na dia kely aza. Nanaitra be anay ny nahita io razana iray io, toy ny tsy nampino mihitsy aza.
Niverina tato an-tsaiko ny zavatra hitako tamin’ny taona lasa. Nahita faty maro hafa aho tamin’izany, ary anisan’izany ilay mpihanika iray izay nitovy tanteraka tamiko ny akanjo mena sy ny kiraro nanaovany. Tamberina mampivarahontsana teo amin’ny toerana iray, 5 minitra miala ny Camp 4. Ohatra ny mahazo aina be izany ny paozin’ireo vata mangatsiaka rehetra teo, mivokona toa ny zaza ao an-kibon-dreniny, toy ny hoe nipetraka haka aina fotsiny izy ireo, toy ny hoe tsy nahatsapa akory fa kay efa nanakaiky ny fahafatesany.
Ny zavatra tena mampatahotra indrindra rehefa eny ambony mihoatra ny 8 000 metatra eny dia manomboka mihamalaina ny vatana. Noho ny tsy fahampian’ny oksizena dia lasa tsy dia misy fihetseham-po loatra intsony. Ny ady amin’ny fahafatesana sisa no mibahan-toerana : mandingana razana, mamaha ny farango fiarovana mba ahafahana miodidina azy, miverina mamatotra amin’ny tady fiarovana dia manohy ny dia. Mandroso miadana eny.
Mahatalanjona ny tendrombohitra, saingy tsy mamela anao hanao hadisoana na dia kely aza. Mankahery sy mahatsiaro ireo rehetra namoy ny ainy 🙏

Everest fascinates, but it also exacts a heavy toll. Even before we began our final summit push this year, we learned that 5 people had already lost their lives in the span of 10 days (including 4 on the very first stage towards Camp 1). We even saw climbers, seriously injured by falling ice blocks, being rushed down the mountain.
But it is during the "Summit Push", on the infamous summit ridge (Hillary Step), that the icy reality of the "Death Zone" hits you. We passed two bodies there.
The first had been there for less than 24 hours. We were told that he was obsessed with the summit; "summit fever" had blinded him. Ignoring the warnings of his team who begged him to turn back, he kept going, reached the summit, and then passed away moments later, drained of all energy.
The second had been resting there for years. The extreme cold freezes time: his face, his hair, his ears... everything was perfectly intact. It is an unsettling, almost unreal sight.
This brought me back to the images from last year. I had passed other bodies, including a climber with exactly the same red down suit and the same boots as me... a terrifying mirror effect just 5 minutes from Camp 4. All these bodies seem peaceful, frozen in fetal positions, as if they had simply sat down to rest without ever realizing that the end was approaching.
What is perhaps the most frightening thing at over 8,000 meters is the apathy that takes over. The lack of oxygen numbs your emotions. The survival instinct takes up all the space: you step over a body, unclip your carabiner to go around it, reclip to the fixed rope, and keep moving forward. One step at a time.
The mountain is magnificent, but it forgives no mistakes. A thought for those who remained there 🙏
