The U19 rowing season reached its peak last weekend at the World Rowing Junior Championships in Plovdiv, Bulgaria 🇧🇬. Representing Team Austria 🇦🇹 from Upper Austria were Ella Nader and Ben Eckschlager, both members of Wiking Linz, competing in the same crews as at the European Championships earlier this year.

In the women's pair, Ella Nader and her partner from Wiener Ruderklub Donau Esther Schöberl finished 3rd in the B-Final, placing them 9th in the world overall.

The men's eight, with Ben Eckschlager on board, faced a more difficult weekend with a bit of bad luck. After unexpectedly missing out on the A-final, health issues unfortunately forced the team to withdraw from the B-Final.

Congratulations to all the athletes for their dedication!

European Rowing Championships - Varese 2026 🇮🇹

A grueling and incredibly hot weekend is behind our rowers, who left it all out on the water at the European Championships in Varese, Italy. The standout performance came from Konrad Hultsch (Wiking Linz ) in the lightweight men's single sculls, finishing an impressive 4th and missing out on a bronze medal by less than a second!

In the women's double sculls, Laura Swoboda (WSV Ottensheim ) and Lara Tiefenthaler teamed up to take 2nd place in the B-final, placing 8th overall.

Meanwhile, due to unexpected circumstances, Julian Schöberl (WSV Ottensheim ) had to switch to the heavyweight single sculls at the very last minute. After narrowly missing out on the semifinals, he raced in the C-final—where erratic wake from the referees' boats practically brought the race to a standstill—ultimately finishing 5th in his race and 17th overall.

Heads up, team, and full steam ahead toward the next challenge! 🚣‍♂️💪

Coupe de la Jeunesse 2026 🚣‍♂️

Last weekend, Lucerne 🇨🇭 hosted the Coupe de la Jeunesse, often called the "mini European Championship" for U19 and promising U17 rowers who are not yet qualifying for the World Championships. Nine athletes from Upper Austria (OÖRV) represented the Austrian national team 🇦🇹 during the two-day event, delivering solid performances across multiple categories.

▪️In the Men's Quadruple Sculls (JM4x), U17 rowers Benedek Münch (WSV Ottensheim), Vinzent Hack (RV Ister Linz), and Paul Niemetz (RC Wels) teamed up with Elias Öckmayer (RV Pöchlarn). Testing themselves against older competition, they finished 8th on the first day and won the B-final on the second day to secure 7th place overall.

▪️The Women's Quadruple Sculls (JW4x) featured Carolin Krause and Luisa Ömer (both RV Wiking Linz), Darina Kishkina (WSV Ottensheim), and Ava Prainsack (WRK Donau). After a 9th-place finish on day one, the crew advanced to the A-final on the second day, finishing 5th overall.

▪️In the Men's Coxless Pair (JM2-), Alex Stallinger Huber (RV Seewalchen) and Simon Campbell (RV Ister Linz) reached the A-final on both days, finishing in 6th place in both rounds.

▪️In the Men's Double Sculls (JM2x), Benedek Szeder (RV Ister Linz) competed alongside Paul Gunzer (WRC Pirat). The duo raced in the B-finals on both days, taking 10th place on the first day and 11th on the second.

Competing at this level is an important stepping stone toward major international events. Congratulations to all the athletes and coaches on a successful weekend of racing.
