Wednesday Rewind ⏪

Had to dig deep into the archives to find these pics, from the first ever Ambition camp, way back in 2007 🤯

It’s always fun to look back at the early days - you don’t know what you don’t know and all that. Much of what we began with, the philosophy behind things and how we structure our teams, remain the same to this day. There have however, been many learning points along the way!

2007 marked the beginning of something new & exciting. We were all so young, but full of energy, spirit & belief in the journey we were about to embark on…. and then the rental van broke down on the first day 😂😂😂 The first ever training day of Ambition Racing, started off with a broken down vehicle.

We were based in Bormio, Italy at the time, a discovery that has served British ski racing well for many years since & through the help of strangers (Nicola Dei Cas, someone who has become a lifelong friend since those days) we were gifted a van for the week, so that we could avoid catastrophe 🚐💨

Ambition was nearly dead in the water before it had even started 😬 and was saved that day by the kindness of those early friends and supporters 🙏

The faces in the first pic will have long since finished ski racing but they were the first crew, the ones who took a leap of faith & paved the way for the many who have since passed through our doors.

Stelvio looked a little different back then, as did the waistline of (pictured in slide 3 as a u16 athlete).

Good times 🤝

Summer / Pre-Season training - how’s it different and why is it important?

Well, firstly as with any skill, the more you practice it, the more you improve at it (generally speaking). Within the context of Ski Racing and programming however, it’s more about the ‘types’ of training you do over the course of the year.

If you fall into the category of always feeling like you’re chasing your tail; arriving on camp, doing 2x training days per discipline if you’re lucky (with dodgy weather for 1-2 of those perhaps), then arriving at races feeling unprepared? Well, it might not be that you aren’t doing enough skiing across the year, perhaps it’s just the wrong type.

Most programs, ours included, will consider a small amount of periodisation within the programming - Summer training is where it all re-starts, with a little time to break things down into simpler chunks, refine & build back up again. Autumn training might also follow suit in a similar fashion. At some point following that however, as we get closer to the competition season, the focus can definitely switch to a more tactical approach, more race simulation and less time for going “back to the basics”.

In short, it isn’t always only about doing more, it’s about ensuring you have time allocated for the type (specific focus) of training, alongside the time (volume based).

The battle of the Lowland Nations is back 🥞

Following on from our August Neuss camp, we will be returning once again in September for a training / race prep camp in the lead up to the Lowland Champs 2026 🏁

Both camps (August & September) will now follow a very similar format, of SnowCentre MCR Sunday training followed by a trip down to the South of England, ready for collections at both Cobham & Maidstone on the Monday morning.

From there it’s over to Neuss we go for a week of training! The September camp will have an optional addition of staying out longer for the races of course, supported by the Ambition coaching staff 🫡

These camps are fully open & are now bookable through the Ambition website - and please feel free to get in touch in the meantime, with any questions that you may have!

Here we gooooo 🚐💨

Wednesday throwbacks - down memory lane 💭🚗

This pic would have been from the British Champs 2016. We won a lot of British Junior Club titles in that period, back when we knew what the ‘competition’ we were all in was about…

Our FIS team pictured was led at the time by myself and Tom White. Our Children’s groups were just as strong in that era however, led by Rob Bullen and TJ Baldwin for much of it.

A golden generation if you ask me. Some great years from circa 2014 - 2020 once we had Haus Tirol in a manageable place (the first 3 years from 2011-2014 were the hardest I’ve had to work & also made others work, in my life 🫣).

Paul Henderson (pictured holding the trophy) turned up in 2012 with around 100 FIS points (and around the same number of DNF1’s). We went on a 4 year crusade (along with Kieran Norris once he went full time) skiing in every month of the year. It was full on, May free skiing, June Indoors, July in Stelvio, August in Chile, September back to Stelvio, smashing on at home from October & then spending some dark but brilliant days in Norway too 😅

Others joined the team throughout that era, many unknown names that more than held their own following the same philosophy - Barney Lewis, Beth Widdup, Alice MacAulay, to name few… and Peter Glasgow even managed to win a British Junior Champs title in that early period.

The more we trained, the luckier we all got 🤷🏻‍♂️. It was a truly meaningful period and it’s fun to look back on and reminisce about from time to time. Mainly with Paul and a couple others, quoting the Inbetweeners and Ricky Gervais endlessly (that part has continued throughout).

I saw Paul yesterday, grown up, with a daughter of his own now. When he quit in 2016, we had done 4 hard years together. He went out as the GS, SG and Combined British Junior Champion, and as one of our most consistent FIS skiers of that era.

Good times, with some great people ✊

More next Wednesday… 🙏

Still 6 months away but all this chat of summer skiing has got us reminiscing about our flagship event, the Ambition Champs!

Throwing it back to a few of the best shots of the 2026 event, taking by (that P is for Phil 😉) from all around - recently voted the greatest alpine skiing training and racing venue on planet earth 🌍

If you’re a U16 (or younger) athlete, you’re welcome to come and compete from 3rd - 7th January 2027, with the FIS gate slapping warriors competing in Slalom only events on the 8th & 9th January 🔴🔵

SuperG training day at the turn of the year for all of the clubs to practice on the race piste together, then it’ll be time to battle it out for the 2027 international race spots 🇬🇧

*It’ll be a bit of a super-slalom this year so you’d better be training legs this summer. You’ve got the fun police to thank for that one 👮‍♀️

Ambition 2026/27 Taster Camp dates & details can now be found right here ⬆️ ⬆️ ⬆️ and also through our website booking system 👨🏻‍💻

Over the past 15 years, we’ve enjoyed more of these fun, open, introductory weeks than we even care to remember - either kicking off the autumn, or closing out the spring in great fashion!

You don’t have to be an Ambition Team athlete to get involved (you don’t even need to have the intention of becoming one either), they are just an opportunity for some great ski days, alongside like minded athletes, based out of our academy home; Haus Tirol 🤩

We have two Ambition Taster Camps for 2026/27 and we look forward to seeing you there 🫡

Here we go! Back down to Arrowtown / Coronet this summer for our traditional Ambition New Zealand Camp 🥝

Over the past 10 years we have some great experiences (and even better race results) down under, providing a ‘mini-season’ of training for the Ambition athletes!

This camp has it all; great training up at Coronet, endless activities and experiences off of the hill, with some of the friendliest locals you’ll ever meet 🙏

We’re looking forward to competing throughout the South Island in the FIS & Australia New Zealand Cup circuit (min 12x races), as well as the Interfield / National Points circuits with our younger skiers too 🏁

The New Zealand Camp is truly a special camp to be a part of and, with just a couple of spots remaining on the trip, could be something to jump in on this summer (or NZ winter 🤪)

All enquiries through the Ambition website or via email; [email protected] as always 🫡

Hard to believe it but this coming 2026/2027 season, will in fact be the 20th season of Ambition Racing 🎉

As such, to kick things off next week, starting with our 2026 Ambition Club National event, we will be running a Flash Sale ⚡️offering 10% off of all website bookings from early Monday morning!

Keep an eye out on the website & socials over the coming week for information on camps, race events training nights & more 👨🏻‍💻

Just a small thank you to show our appreciation to all. Without so many supportive families, past and present, we wouldn’t have had this type of longevity with the team ☺️

We look forward to sharing this special milestone year, with you all, throughout the coming season 🩵🩵🩵
