Sanada Yukimura was killed 403 years ago today, June 3, 1615, during the Summer Siege of Osaka.

Sanada Yukimura was one of the greatest warriors of the Sengoku period, and had been a participant in many of the major battles of the day.

At the Summer Siege of Osaka, The Sanada clan had set up a small fortress just south of Osaka Castle. The 7,000 samurai inside this Sanada-Maru as the Dejiro, or “outer castle”, was called, held out against some 30,000 Tokugawa troops. Exhausted from the previous days battle against the forces of Date Masamune, and badly wounded in the fierce battle that had engaged him for most of this day against Matsudaira Tadanao, he sat below a pine tree in the grounds of the Yasui Shrine and waited. When the enemy came near, he announced his name, and in saying that he was too tired to continue fighting, allowed a Tokugawa samurai named Nishio Nizaemon to take his head. A statue of the weary warrior now sits below the second-generation pine tree in the shrine grounds.

Incidentally, he was never referred to as Yukimura during his lifetime. This was an Edo period fancy used in semi historical novels. His real name was Sanada Nobushige.
